CONT

Cathodic protection involves the use of a galvanic or impressed direct electric current to render the pipeline cathodic, thus causing it to be a negative element in the circuit.

OBS

There are two methods of applying cathodic protection, active and passive. In either case the structure is regarded as the cathode in an electrolytic cell, the anode being an attached metal bar, bracelet or plate, and the electrolyte the separating medium.

CONT

What has made the new global radio stations possible is that, unlike old-fashioned wireless radio, the new radio stations broadcast their signals not over the airways but down the telephone lines. No costly radio transmitters and relay stations are needed; no licence is required for using the world’s precious frequency spectrum. All it demands is a personal computer and a modem at the broadcasting station and, at the listening end, the same plus a pair of loud-speakers.

OBS

Global radio is the latest manifestation of the www. The key has been the development of a certain piece of software that allows a digital recording stored on a computer to be transmitted over the Internet and played instantly and continuously as it is received by the listener’s computer in real-time.

OBS

If you take a local FM station as the standard you will be disappointed with the broadcast quality of streaming audio received via the Web. But you will be favorable impressed if you compare it with a portable shortwave receiver.

The representation of a general pulse transmission system is given in Figure 8. 1. Here, the information input to the system is encoded in some sense.... This encoded signal drives the modulator, which maps the pulse sequence into an analog wave suitable for transmission over the channel.... At the receiving end, the demodulator maps the received analog waveform into a pulse sequence that is a "best guess" of the sequence transmitted. The decoder operates on the binary sequence to extract the information originally impressed on the encoder. The overall objective is to transfer the information from the input to the output within some a priori specified low error rate, where the error rate is the average number of disagreements per unit of time between the inputs and the outputs.

The degree with which a system, or a portion of a system, accurately reproduces at its output the essential characteristics of the signal that is impressed upon its input.

Audio was driven by an ideal that was shared by all, and perfection in audio was easily defined and universally accepted : It was the sound of a live orchestra (or any other producer of musical sounds) in its natural acoustical habitat. The ability to reproduce that sound was the measure of fidelity - the yardstick by which equipment designers gauged the success of their efforts and set the goals for future designs.

La notion de fidélité a évolué depuis quelques décennies; le problème est de satisfaire l'auditeur. [Brachiopods of the] subfamily Leptostrophiinae [are] unattached, concavo-convex, biplanate or rarely resupinate, with costellate to unequally parvicostellate radial ornamentation, less commonly broken at irregular intervals to give [a] subspinose(nervate) appearance; rugae [are] impersistent posterolaterally or rarely concentric. [The] ventral muscle scar [is] subtriangular and commonly splayed; [the] dorsal adductor scars [are] impressed on [the] floor of [the] brachial valve with variably developed posterolateral bounding ridges.
