The typical flexographic press consists of an ink tray filled with a thin, rapidly drying ink that is transferred by a fountain roller to an anilox roller, a doctor blade then removes the surplus ink leaving ink in the recessed cells which is then transferred to the plate cylinder. The substrate picks up the ink from the plate cylinder, and is held in position by the impression cylinder.

A soft steel cylinder is placed into the die-sinking press with its cone-shaped top touching the centre of the reduction matrix(negative design). A single stroke from the press imparts the design of the matrix into the block below like the effect produced by pressing a signet ring into soft wax. The resultant positive-design block, the punch is heat-hardened for use in the final step. In a similar impression process, the design of the punch is imparted to a series of steel blocks to provide the quantity of negative dies required for the coinage.

The central(or common) impression cylinder press, or CIC press, has all color stations around a single impression cylinder mounted in the main press frame. The web contacts the central cylinder as it enters the press and remains "locked" to it until the web leaves the press at the last press station, preventing register shift from color to color. The CIC presses may have from two to eight stations, with six being the most common.
