  • Noise Pollution
CONT

Impulse noise is a category of(acoustic) noise which includes unwanted, almost instantaneous(thus impulse-like) sharp sounds(like clicks and pops). Noises of the kind are usually caused by electromagnetic interference, scratches on the recording disks, gunfire, explosions and ill synchronization in digital recording and communication.

OBS

Impact noise is created by the impact of one surface on another and is of a short duration. Impulsive noise is typically an air noise that has a short duration, such as the shooting of a firearm or the explosion of a firework.

OBS

impulsive noise: term officially approved by the Electronics and Telecommunications Terminology Committee (CUTEL).

  • Pollution par le bruit
DEF

Record 3 2016-12-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Noise Pollution
CONT

An impulse characteristic is included in some sound level meters. It responds rapidly to increasing levels and slowly to decreasing levels. It gives a higher level reading for impulse-type sounds than will an ordinary sound level meter using fast or slow time averaging. However, if all three are used to measure a noise which does not vary in level, the same reading will be obtained. The impulse characteristic is sometimes used for measuring the noise of punch presses, gun shots, and similar sources of impulsive sounds.

Subject field(s)

CONT

The SIHS [Soldier's Integrated Headwear System] headborne system should be designed with warfighting in mind; predominantly for high tempo operations... The highest priority system capability for the headborne system is protection. Chief among these is protection against high and low velocity fragments [and] blast... Similarly, blast and impulse noise injury to the ears has been identified as important from both a protection and a command and control perspective. The future headborne system also needs to integrate CB [chemical and biological] protection for skin and respiration [and needs to include GPS [global positioning system] and radio antennae on the helmet, as well as any combat [identification] detector technology. For camouflage,... temperate and hot environments [are] important and... any future system [needs] to manage light, noise and thermal emissions to avoid detection by the enemy.... Compatibility with weapons, CB protective equipment, and corrective vision spectacles were seen to be essential for the dismounted rifleman role.

DEF

In analog and digital communications, signal-to-noise ratio, often written S/N or SNR, is a measure of signal strength relative to background noise[;] the ratio is usually measured in decibels (dB).

OBS

This ratio is usually in terms of peak values in the case of impulse noise and in terms of the root-mean-square values in the case of random noise.

OBS

This ratio may be a function of bandwidth of the transmission system.

OBS

signal to noise ratio; SNR: term and abbreviation officially approved by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

DEF
