Record 3 2008-02-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydraulic Turbines
DEF

A prime mover in which water, steam or a hot gas under pressure is directed against the blades of a rotor causing it to rotate.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Turbines hydrauliques
CONT

Record 4 2008-02-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydraulic Turbines
  • Steam Turbines
CONT

’Reaction turbines’ exploit the pressure head of water; ’impulse turbines’ make use of the velocity of water allowed to accelerate down a long ’penstock’. In practice, of course, a reaction turbine will require the water to be moving through so that a velocity component is also exploited.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Turbines hydrauliques
  • Turbines à vapeur
CONT

Record 5 2008-02-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydraulic Turbines
DEF

A hydraulic turbine of the impulse type in which a jet of water is directed at specially shaped buckets round the periphery of a wheel so turning the wheel on its axis.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Turbines hydrauliques
DEF

CONT

Of the various elements of the turbine, perhaps the most difficult to design properly is the blading... Two types of blading have been developed... These are impulse bladings and reaction bladings.

French

DEF

CONT

If... each fluid maintained its own isentropic velocity regardless of drag, the trouble would... be transferred to the discs of the bladeless turbine and to the blades of the total flow impulse turbine which would be struck by two fluids at different velocities, so that the discs and blades could not move at an ideal speed to suit both fluids.

If a reaction turbine were used instead of an impulse machine the trouble would remain; for a high nozzle efficiency would mean that a blade speed suited to the steam velocity would be too high for the water velocity....

CONT

Total flow impulse turbine.... This is simply a proposal for an axial flow impulse turbine to which water/steam mixtures are admitted through expansion nozzles for impingement onto impulse blading.... The idea is not new, having already been tried at Pauzhetka in the USSR..., where it was shown that the power developed from the water/steam mixture from a test bore was virtually the same as that produced from the steam phase alone from the same well, but that the optimal rotational speed was nearly twice as high with steam as with the wet mixture.
