We present the modification of two ESA [European Space Agency] ground stations carried out in order to support the in-flight RF [Radio Frequency] validation of the Proximity Communication Equipment(PCE), part of the International Space Station(ISS). This subsystem plays a critical role during the docking of the Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV), and has to be tested prior to each ATV launch, to ensure that the RF performance is as expected. For the check-out, an unmodulated signal is transmitted by the PCE during an ISS pass, and received by the two ground stations. Based on the strength of the received signal, the radiation characteristic of the complete PCE can be assessed, and compared with the nominal performance. The measurement process requires calibrating the receiving subsystem, including antenna, front-end and back-end equipment. The adopted calibration procedure, only relying on radio stars measurement, does not require the use of a calibrated source external to the ground station.

Il comprend deux transpondeurs à spectre étalé, deux équipements de gestion de protocoles CCSDS [Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems] et des équipements radio fréquence. Le PCE sera installé dans le module Zvezda de l'ISS et sera opérationnel durant la phase dite «de proximité» correspondant aux 30 derniers kilomètres du vol ATV et à l'exercice délicat de son arrimage à la Station. Ce rendez-vous orbital automatique représentera une première européenne. Parmi l'ensemble des données de commande et de contrôle qu'il transmettra dans le cadre de sa mission de communications, le PCE fournira à l'ATV les informations de position GPS [système mondial de localization] nécessaires à la navigation relative vers la Station spatiale internationale (ISS). On a déterminé que le FCU (régulateur de carburant) fonctionnait normalement sous tous les rapports, sauf que le soufflet moteur du FCU était défectueux et présentait une crique de fatigue mégacyclique causée par des vibrations. La surveillance en vol du débit carburant n'a révélé aucune anomalie importante parce que, de par leur conception, l'ensemble des soufflets de détection renferme, pour la redondance, un soufflet dépressurisé, ce qui permet au FCU de continuer à fonctionner normalement. Ce mauvais fonctionnement n'a pas de rapport avec l'incident.

Fuel starvation and fuel exhaustion(sometimes referred to as fuel depletion) are problems that can affect internal combustion engines fuelled by either diesel, kerosene, petroleum or any other combustible liquid or gas. If no fuel is available for an engine to burn, it cannot function. All modes of transport powered by such engines can be affected by this problem, but the consequences are most significant when it occurs to aircraft in flight. There are two main ways that an engine can run out of fuel :-Using up fuel. This is the most common cause of fuel exhaustion. An engine can use up all available fuel due to insufficient fuel being loaded for the planned journey or the journey time extended for too long(in the case of an aircraft, due to in-flight delays or problems)... ;-Leaking. In some cases, the fuel tank or the supply piping to the engine leaks and fuel is lost. This can cause engines to starve.

For ascent and descent vehicles, the time constraints of the dynamic flight modes preclude the opportunity to utilize in-flight maintenance and system reconfiguration to recover from failures. Therefore, two-fault tolerance is a critical element in ensuring adequate vehicle reliability and should be incorporated whenever possible. When two-fault tolerance is either impractical or may have a negative impact on overall vehicle reliability, single fault tolerance will be provided wherein no single-failure will result in the loss of the crew.

The complementary nature of the LMS [Life and Microgravity Spacelab] musculoskeletal experiments has engendered the development of a multi-purpose workstation to support each of the investigations : the Torque Velocity Dynamometer, or TVD. Developed by the European Space Agency specifically in response to the science requirements of this mission, the TVD is the platform for many of the in-flight musculoskeletal activities, as well as for those that establish baseline measurements before the flight and provide follow-on data after the orbital segment of the mission.
