Dans une étude très connue de Daniel Simons, des sujets regardant une vidéo de deux équipes jouant au basket-ball devaient compter le nombre de passes effectuées par l'une des équipes. Pendant l'exécution de cette tâche, un gorille apparaissait en traversant lentement l'espace de jeu : 50 % des sujets ne le remarquaient pas, bien qu'il sautait aux yeux lorsque la vidéo était visionnée de manière passive (Simons and Chabris, 1999). Cet effet est nommé cécité inattentionnelle.
