A crystalline nanoparticle that exhibits size-dependent properties due to quantum confinement effects on the electronic states. 3, record 1, English, - quantum%20dot
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
A quantum dot, also called a "qdot" or a "nanodot," is a semiconductor nanocrystal that is less or equal to 10 nm in size, and confines the motion of conduction band electrons in the three spatial directions. So, by definition, quantum dots are able to trap electrons. A given quantum dot contains a finite number of conduction band electrons typically in the range of 1 to 100. The energy levels of these electrons can be explained by using quantum physics, hence the name "quantum dots." 2, record 1, English, - quantum%20dot

6, record 1, Spanish, - punto%20cu%C3%A1ntico

The spiny water flea(Bythotrephes cederstroemi) is not an insect but a small crustacean, about half an inch long with a long, sharp, barbed tail spine. It is native to Great Britain, and its home range extended through northern Europe east to the Caspian Sea. It was first found in Lake Huron in 1984, and was most likely introduced from ballast water discharge from a trans-oceanic freighter. Since then, populations of the crustacean have exploded and it can now be found throughout the Great Lakes and in many inland lakes and waterways. 3, record 5, English, - spiny%20water%20flea

The basic design of the PWR [pressurized water reactor] has not changed … The reactor core contains uranium fuel clad in zircalloy tubes. As silver, indium, and cadmium control rods are extracted from the core, the fuel heats up. Water circulated through the fuel rod area at 2000 psi [pounds per square inch] is heated to 600°F. It transfers its heat to secondary water in U-shaped tubes. The cooled primary water is then pumped back to the reactor core to be heated again. 1, record 11, English, - primary%20water

cyclone washer. Cyclone washing of small coal originates from the Netherlands. Clean separation is effected with the aid of centrifugal force. The heavier shale particles move to the wall of the cyclone and are eventually discharged at the bottom while the lighter coal particles are swept towards the central vortex and are discharged through an outlet at the top. The washer may be used for cleaning coal up to three-fourths of an inch. The coal is normally de-slimed at about 0. 5 millimeter before cleaning. The separating medium is water and ground magnetite, the bulk of which is recovered and returned to the circuit. 1, record 15, English, - cyclone%20washer

Tensiometers measure soil tension. This is also often referred to as soil suction or vacuum. Soil tension is a measure of how tightly water is held in the soil, and is measured in pressure units of centibars (cb) or kilopascals (kPa). These are equivalent units. One hundred centibars equal approximately 15 psi. Soil tension increases as moisture in the soil is depleted. This force also draws water out of the tensiometer through its porous tip, creating a vacuum inside the tensiometer. This negative pressure, or tension, is registered on the tensiometer vacuum gauge. The soil tension measured with tensiometers is an indirect indication of soil moisture content and can be used as an indicator of irrigation need. 3, record 22, English, - soil%20suction

Simply put, the pressure chamber... is just a device for applying air pressure to a leaf(or small shoot), where most of the leaf is inside the chamber but a small part of the leaf stem(the petiole) is exposed to the outside of the chamber through a seal. The amount of pressure that it takes to cause water to appear at the petiole tells you how much tension the leaf is experiencing on its water : a high value of pressure means a high value of tension and a high degree of water stress. The units of pressure most commonly used are the Bar(1 Bar=14. 5 pounds per square inch) and the megapascal(1 MPa=10 bars). 4, record 24, English, - pressure%20bomb

An abrasive jet uses water that is pressurized up to 40, 000 pounds per square inch(psi) and then forced through a small sapphire orifice at 2500 feet per second, or about two and a half times the speed of sound. Garnet abrasive is then pulled into this high-speed stream of water and mixed with the water in a long ceramic mixing tube. A stream of abrasive laden water moving at 1000 feet per second exits the ceramic tube. This jet of water and abrasive is then directed at the material to be machined. The jet drags the abrasive through the material in a curved path and the resulting centrifugal forces on the particles press them against the work piece. The cutting action is a grinding process where the forces and motions are provided by water, rather than a grinding wheel. 1, record 27, English, - abrasive%20jet

Drip Irrigation.... Water is delivered in small quantities under low pressure directly to... the root zone of the plants. You’ll need 1/2 inch polyethylene header pipe, and a roll of thin tape-like porous tubing. The header pipe connects to a garden hose and routes water through the garden. The pipe is placed either down the center or along one end of the garden. Small puncture holes are then made with a screwdriver into the header pipe at intervals corresponding to garden row. Eight-to ten-inch pieces of rubber connecting hose are then inserted into these holes. The other end of the connecting hose attaches to a length of porous tape. This tape is rolled out along each vegetable bed and cut to the same length as the row. Then end of the tape is then crimped to prevent water loss when the system is in use. Porous irrigation tape is best placed about three to four inches away from the base of the plants. 1, record 29, English, - porous%20irrigation%20tape

Readying the electrotype shell. The metal layer deposited on the mould is called a shell and is 2/10 to 4/10 of a mm in thickness(8/1000 to 16/1000 of an inch)... The thickness is in function of the amount of time given to the process of electrolysis. Once the desired thickness is achieved the shell must be detached from the mould. This is not always an easy matter. If the mould is made of wax it can be removed with boiling water... Plastic moulds are removed by pulling them off, and lead moulds must be cut away along the edges. Shells are fragile and as they are not rigid they are sometimes damaged when being removed from the mould. In any case, shells must be backed to make them hard enough to print with. Backing is usually done by pouring a molten alloy made of lead(97%) and antimony(3%) onto the back of the shell. 2, record 34, English, - electrotype%20shell

The steam heating system conveys steam through pipes to heat exchangers, such as radiators, convectors, baseboard units, radiant panels, or fan-driven heaters, and returns the resulting condensed water to the boiler.
