DEF

A crystalline nanoparticle that exhibits size-dependent properties due to quantum confinement effects on the electronic states.

CONT

A quantum dot, also called a "qdot" or a "nanodot," is a semiconductor nanocrystal that is less or equal to 10 nm in size, and confines the motion of conduction band electrons in the three spatial directions. So, by definition, quantum dots are able to trap electrons. A given quantum dot contains a finite number of conduction band electrons typically in the range of 1 to 100. The energy levels of these electrons can be explained by using quantum physics, hence the name "quantum dots."

OBS

[It is often] made from cadmium selenide, which absorbs white light and then reemits it a couple of nanoseconds later in a specific color.

OBS

... the technology is being used in medicine. The crystals are one ten-millionth of an inch in size and can be dissolved in water. When illuminated, they act as molecule-sized LEDs [light emitting diodes] and can be used as probes to track antibodies, viruses, proteins, or DNA [deoxyribonucleic acid] within the human body.

OBS

Nanodots have applications in transistors, solar cells, LEDs [light emitting diodes], diode lasers, and can also be used as agents for medical imaging and qubits (quantum switches) in quantum computing.

OBS

quantum dot: term and definition standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

CONT

CONT

The spiny water flea(Bythotrephes cederstroemi) is not an insect but a small crustacean, about half an inch long with a long, sharp, barbed tail spine. It was first found in Lake Huron in 1984, and was most likely introduced from ballast water discharge from a trans-oceanic freighter. Since then, populations of the crustacean have exploded and it can now be found throughout the Great Lakes and in many inland lakes and waterways.

Soil suction is equal to a force per unit area that must be exceeded by an externally applied suction to initiate water flow from the soil. Soil suction is expressed in pounds per square inch.

CONT

Tensiometers measure soil tension. This is also often referred to as soil suction or vacuum. Soil tension is a measure of how tightly water is held in the soil, and is measured in pressure units of centibars (cb) or kilopascals (kPa). These are equivalent units. One hundred centibars equal approximately 15 psi. Soil tension increases as moisture in the soil is depleted. This force also draws water out of the tensiometer through its porous tip, creating a vacuum inside the tensiometer. This negative pressure, or tension, is registered on the tensiometer vacuum gauge. The soil tension measured with tensiometers is an indirect indication of soil moisture content and can be used as an indicator of irrigation need.

Instrument ... used to measure water potential of plant leaves.

CONT

Simply put, the pressure chamber... is just a device for applying air pressure to a leaf(or small shoot), where most of the leaf is inside the chamber but a small part of the leaf stem(the petiole) is exposed to the outside of the chamber through a seal. The amount of pressure that it takes to cause water to appear at the petiole tells you how much tension the leaf is experiencing on its water : a high value of pressure means a high value of tension and a high degree of water stress. The units of pressure most commonly used are the Bar(1 Bar=14. 5 pounds per square inch) and the megapascal(1 MPa=10 bars).

CONT

How is water potential measured? ... - Pressure bomb (pressure chamber): measures [psi subscript w] of whole leaves, stems : - when a stem or leaf is cut off of a plant, the sap is sucked back into the xylem, since it is under tension; - the tissue is sealed inside a steel chamber, with the cut end protruding; - pressure is applied (using compressed nitrogen) until the sap is pushed back up to the top; this amount of pressure is equal but opposite to the [Psi subscript w] of the tissue.

OBS

There are different types of pressure chambers, some using a tank of high pressure gas, some using a hand-pump, but all work on the same basic principle and in most cases the operation and use of the different types of pressure chambers is identical.

An abrasive jet uses water that is pressurized up to 40, 000 pounds per square inch(psi) and then forced through a small sapphire orifice at 2500 feet per second, or about two and a half times the speed of sound. Garnet abrasive is then pulled into this high-speed stream of water and mixed with the water in a long ceramic mixing tube. A stream of abrasive laden water moving at 1000 feet per second exits the ceramic tube. This jet of water and abrasive is then directed at the material to be machined. The jet drags the abrasive through the material in a curved path and the resulting centrifugal forces on the particles press them against the work piece. The cutting action is a grinding process where the forces and motions are provided by water, rather than a grinding wheel.

Drip Irrigation.... Water is delivered in small quantities under low pressure directly to... the root zone of the plants. You’ll need 1/2 inch polyethylene header pipe, and a roll of thin tape-like porous tubing. The header pipe connects to a garden hose and routes water through the garden. The pipe is placed either down the center or along one end of the garden. Small puncture holes are then made with a screwdriver into the header pipe at intervals corresponding to garden row. Eight-to ten-inch pieces of rubber connecting hose are then inserted into these holes. The other end of the connecting hose attaches to a length of porous tape. This tape is rolled out along each vegetable bed and cut to the same length as the row. Then end of the tape is then crimped to prevent water loss when the system is in use. Porous irrigation tape is best placed about three to four inches away from the base of the plants.

OBS

"Comminutor" is usually used to name a specific type of shredding device and is a registered trade name. However it is also often used in a broader sense to mean all types of shredders and thus may be considered a synonym of shredder.

Readying the electrotype shell. The metal layer deposited on the mould is called a shell and is 2/10 to 4/10 of a mm in thickness(8/1000 to 16/1000 of an inch)... The thickness is in function of the amount of time given to the process of electrolysis. Once the desired thickness is achieved the shell must be detached from the mould. This is not always an easy matter. If the mould is made of wax it can be removed with boiling water... Plastic moulds are removed by pulling them off, and lead moulds must be cut away along the edges. Shells are fragile and as they are not rigid they are sometimes damaged when being removed from the mould. In any case, shells must be backed to make them hard enough to print with. Backing is usually done by pouring a molten alloy made of lead(97%) and antimony(3%) onto the back of the shell.
