Pressure is measured using a barometer. An aneroid barometer has a capsule [usually metallic] which collapses slightly when pressure increases and expands when it decreases. These motions are transferred to a dial and calibrated in either millimetres of mercury or millibars or inches. 5, record 2, English, - aneroid%20barometer
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The aneroid barometer was invented by a Frenchman, Lucien Vidie, in 1843. He produced a metallic barometer which he called an aneroid, from the Greek, meaning "without liquid." The principle of the aneroid barometer is the change in height of a sealed metallic chamber which has flexible upper and lower surfaces. As the pressure changes, so the height of the chamber varies which, in turn, moves an index pointer. 6, record 2, English, - aneroid%20barometer
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 3 CONT
Aneroid barometer is temperature compensated at a given pressure level by adjustment of the residual gas in the aneroid or by a bimetallic link arrangement. The instrument is subject to uncertainties due to variations in the elastic properties of the spring and capsules, and due to wear in the mechanical linkages. 7, record 2, English, - aneroid%20barometer

The mercurial barometer... in its simplest form... consists of a glass tube a little more than 30 inches in length and of uniform internal diameter. With one end closed, the tube is filled with mercury, and inverted into a cup of mercury. The mercury in the tube falls until the column is just supported by the pressure of the atmosphere on the open cup, leaving a vacuum at the upper end of the tube. The height of the column indicates atmospheric pressure, greater pressures supporting higher columns of mercury. The mercurial barometer is subject to rapid variations in height, called pumping, due to pitch and roll of the vessel and temporary changes in atmospheric pressure in the vicinity of the barometer. Because of this... the mercurial barometer has been replaced at sea by the aneroid barometer. 4, record 9, English, - pumping

The gyro, of an attitude indicator that is driven by a vacuum system, requires 4 or more inches of mercury vacuum to operate and 5 minutes to get up to operational speed. An attitude indicator that is electrically driven is operational almost immediately. 1, record 10, English, - driven%20by%20a%20vacuum%20system

Air pressure differential is the principle on which the vacuum driven gyro instruments operate. A vacuum pump run by the airplane engine creates a partial vacuum in the system. A filtered air inlet upstream of the gyros allows air to rush into the system causing the gyro wheels to spin. 1, record 10, English, - driven%20by%20a%20vacuum%20system

Bootstrapping is sometimes confused with the condition known as overboost, but bootstrapping is not a condition which is detrimental to engine life. An overboost condition is one in which manifold pressure exceeds the limits prescribed for a particular engine and can cause serious damage. There are some systems that incorporate a pressure relief valve to prevent a serious overboost condition. The pressure relief valve is generally set to open at 1. 5 inches of mercury above the maximum allowable engine manifold pressure. 2, record 11, English, - overboost

1, record 11, French, - surr%C3%A9gime
