CONT

Crop-yield weather modelling refers to the techniques [that] can be used operationally to determine the likely effect of weather on yields. Although the incidence of weather conditions on yields is well established, its quantitative assessment is not always straightforward : time series analyses of agricultural statistics show that inter-annual variability... of crop yields can be roughly subdivided into [three] components :(i) trend,(ii) direct weather factors[, ] and(iii) indirect weather effects, pests, diseases, weed competition, etc.

Subject field(s)
  • Hormones
  • Animal Breeding
  • Cattle Raising
DEF

A hormone in cattle that regulates growth and milk production.

CONT

Many dairy producers use the hormone, but the practice is controversial because the use of bST may increase the incidence of mastitis(udder infection) in cows, and the long-term human health effects of the slightly increased hormone levels in the milk from treated cows have not been established.

OBS

It can also be produced artificially by genetic engineering and used to increase milk yields.

OBS

Domaine(s)
  • Hormones
  • Amélioration génétique des animaux
  • Élevage des bovins
CONT

CONT

Magneto-optics is the study of effects arising from the interaction of light with magnetized media. Initially linearly polarized light, after interaction with such materials, can exhibit both ellipticity and a rotation of the polarization state. These effects are generally categorized into two phenomena, the Faraday Effect which occurs when electro-magnetic radiation is transmitted through a magnetized media, and the Kerr Effect which deals with reflections from the magnetized media. The Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect(MOKE) is further categorized by the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflection surface and the plane of incidence... If the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the reflection surface and parallel to the plane of incidence, the effect is called the polar Kerr effect. As a matter of simplification, near normal incidence is usually employed when doing experiments in the polar geometry. In the longitudinal effect the magnetization vector is parallel to both the reflection surface and the plane of incidence. When the magnetization is perpendicular to the plane of incidence and parallel to the surface it is said to be in the transverse configuration.

CONT

CONT

Magneto-optic Kerr effect(MOKE) is one of the magneto-optic effects. It describes changes of the reflections from the magnetized media. It is similar to the Faraday effect that describes the light passing through the media. The light that is reflected from a magnetized surface, changes in polarization. MOKE can be further categorized by the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflection surface and the plane of incidence. When the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the reflection surface and parallel to the plane of incidence, the effect is called the polar Kerr effect.

Multi-scale composite models based on the Bragg theory are widely used to study the normalized radar cross-section(NRCS) over the sea surface. However, these models are not able to reproduce correctly the NRCS in all configurations and wind-wave conditions. We have developed a physical model that takes into account, not only the Bragg mechanism, but also the non-Bragg scattering mechanism associated with wave breaking.... Models of the normalized radar cross-section of the sea-surface(NRCS) at intermediate incidence angles are usually treated as a composite models describing the combined effects of Bragg scattering mechanism(effective for surface ocean waves whose wavelengths are of the order of the electromagnetic wave) and local-titling effects due to longer underlying waves(Plant, 1986, Donelan and Pierson, 1987, Romeiser et al., 1994, Romeiser et Alpers, 1997, Janssen et al., 1998).

Subject field(s)
  • Injections, Tubing and Transfusions (Medicine)
DEF

A set of surveillance procedures covering the whole transfusion chain (from the collection of blood and its components to the follow-up of recipients), intended to collect and assess information on unexpected or undesirable effects resulting from the therapeutic use of labile blood products, and to prevent their occurrence or recurrence.

CONT

Hemovigilance is performed to meet three objectives at both the local and national level : to identify risks and their related factor(s) and monitor these risks. The alert function cannot be dissociated from epidemiological surveillance because both processes involve evaluating the impact of the preventive measures in place. The incidence of risks must be estimated and their evolution followed up for each type of recorded transfusion-related incident. At the blood collection level which is part of donor selection, the goal of hemovigilance is to assess the relevance of various medical indicators present in individuals who wish to donate blood. At the transfusion level, the goal of hemovigilance is to estimate the incidence of transfusion-induced side effects in recipients(e. g. viral or bacterial contamination, alloimmunization transfusion attribution errors). The incidence and prevalence of transfusion-associated incidents occasionally justifies the distinction between the three elements of the hemovigilance strategy : the alert system, recipient surveillance and blood collection surveillance.
