Genesis of the scanning laser ophthalmoscope.... In the scanning device, the illumination is incident on a small spot of the fundus for a short time period, the illumination beam is displaced to the adjacent small spot, and this continues until the field of view of the fundus is covered. Simultaneously, with the spot of illumination, the scattered light is detected; the accumulation of all of the light from all of the illuminated spots forms the image of the fundus as seen on the display of the scanning laser ophthalmoscope. 7, record 1, English, - scanning%20laser%20ophthalmoscope

Scanning laser ophthalmoscopes produce high-contrast images even through narrow pupils. Using various color lasers, this method can [allow visualization of] particular structures of the retina noninvasively, i.e., without injection of a contrast agent. These structures include nerve fibers, drusen, nevi, and autofluorescent material. 8, record 1, English, - scanning%20laser%20ophthalmoscope

Plants use the 400 to 700 nm waveband of the light spectrum for photosynthesis. A simple integral relationship exists between the number of molecules changed photochemically and the number of photons absorbed within the requisite waveband regardless of photon energy. The preferred measurement for PAR is Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density(PPFD). This is the number of photons in the 400 to 700 nm waveband incident per unit time on a unit surface. Plant scientists, meteorologists, horticulturists, ecological survey groups and other environmental scientists are using this [Quantum PAR] sensor to measure PPFD in the atmosphere, growth chamber and greenhouse. 3, record 11, English, - photosynthetic%20photon%20flux%20density

1, record 11, French, - %C3%A9clairement%20photonique%20photosynth%C3%A9tique

In photoabsorption spectroscopy, the intensity of monochromatic light passing through a sample is measured, as a function of wavelength(or energy), using a photosensitive detector like a photomultiplier or a photodiode. A decrease in this transmitted intensity, which appears as a dip in the baseline of incident intensity, when intensity is plotted versus wavelength, indicates the occurrence of an electronic or molecular transition in the sample. 2, record 12, English, - photoabsorption%20spectroscopy

Illuminance(usually ’E’ in formulas) is the total amount of visible light illuminating(incident upon) a point on a surface from all directions above the surface. This "surface" can be a physical surface or an imaginary plane. Therefore illuminance is equivalent to irradiance weighted with the response curve of the human eye. 4, record 33, English, - illuminance

Standard unit for illuminance is Lux (lx) which is lumens per square meter (lm/m²). There are several older units of illuminance: footcandle: 1 fc = 10.764 lx; phot: 1 ph = 10 000 lx. Typical illuminance values are: 1 lx = full moon; 10 lx = street lighting; 100-1 000 lx = workspace lighting; 10 000 lx = surgery lighting; 100 000 lx = plain sunshine. 4, record 33, English, - illuminance

Particle sizes and distribution can be successfully measured using low angle laser light scattering(LALLS). This technique uses a light source of known wavelength to cause oscillation of the dipoles present in the particles. The electromagnetic energy released from these oscillating dipoles, known as secondary radiation, radiates out in all directions except along the axis of oscillation. The ratio between the wavelength of incident radiation and the particle size will determine the actual light scattering pattern from the particle. 3, record 36, English, - low%2Dangle%20laser%20light%20scattering

1, record 36, French, - diffraction%20de%20lumi%C3%A8re%20laser%20aux%20petits%20angles

When a polymer absorbs light, it may reradiate the absorbed energy at much longer wave lengths(heat), at slightly longer wave lengths(luminescence), or the energy may be transferred to another molecule. When none of these processes is operative, the absorbed light energy may cause bond breaking leading to degradation. By incorporating an ultraviolet absorbing compound into the plastic, it is possible to essentially eliminate all of the above processes, since the absorber even at concentrations as low as 0. 5% can effectively compete for the incident ultraviolet radiation, thus protecting the plastic form degradation. A second approach to stabilization is to incorporate an additive which, though not an absorber in itself, can accept energy from the polymer substrate, and thus, leave the polymer intact. Since protection of plastics against light degradation can be achieved by these two mechanisms, the broader term "ultraviolet stabilizer" or "light stabilizer" is used to refer to such additives. 1, record 38, English, - ultraviolet%20stabilizer

There are several different types of photoelectric cells. In some [i. e., phototubes] there is a light-sensitive surface [a photocathode] which emits electrons and a second electrode, usually maintained at a fairly high positive potential, which collects the electrons... A second type is the photovoltaic or barrier layer photocell in which incident light produces an emf between two terminals... Solar cells, widely used to provide energy for satellites and space vehicles, are photovoltaic cells converting radiant energy into electrical energy. A familiar form uses a very perfect silicon crystal which is treated with trace impurities to introduce extra positive charges on one side of a thin wafer and extra negative charges on the other side... Radiant energy disturbs the electrical balance of the charges and thereby induces an emf which continues as long as light strikes the crystal... A third type of photoelectric cell [photoconductive, or photoresistive cell] utilizes the photoconductivity effect. 6, record 40, English, - photoelectric%20receptor

1, record 40, French, - r%C3%A9cepteur%20photo%C3%A9lectrique

Temporal resolution refers to how often the same geographic area is revisited by a sensor. Temporal resolution is governed by the orbital characteristics of the satellite vehicle. A sun-synchronous orbit means that the satellite travels on multiple pole to pole orbits coordinated with the circle of illumination(hemisphere of the Sun's incident light), such that the satellite collects at approximately the same time of day at every point on the Earth for every orbit. 2, record 55, English, - temporal%20resolution

The Very High Resolution Spectrometer. The 6. 65 m off-plane Eagle spectrometer connected to the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility(SURF II) electron storage ring at the National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST) is one of the two very high resolution spectrometers(VHRS) in the world that combine a synchrotron radiation light source with photoelectric detection of vacuum ultraviolet spectra. Spectra are obtained over a usable range from approximately 20 nm to 200 nm by scanning the exit slit of the spectrometer at wavelength intervals as small as 0. 1 pm in first order. The beamline leading to the entrance slit of the VHRS includes three cylindrical uncoated glass mirrors with incident angles of 80, 70, and 80 degrees from the normal to provide a converging beam to match the f/number of the instrument which is about f/50. Since 1990, when the three-mirror light collection system was improved, a number of high resolution measurements have been made in the region between 40 nm and 120 nm. 2, record 56, English, - very%20high%20resolution%20spectrometer
