Subject field(s)
  • Compartment - ISO/IEC JTC 1 Information Technology Vocabulary
Universal entry(ies)
02.02.07 (19762)
ISO/IEC standard entry number
DEF

ratio of the reflected radiant or luminous flux to the incident flux in incident radiation of given spectral composition, polarization and geometrical distribution [IEC 50(845), 845-04-58]

OBS

Reflectance (sometimes in AIDC techniques called reflectance factor) is measured on a scale of 0 to 1, at a wavelength or bandwidth of light (spectral response) specified in the particular application specification.

OBS

Barium sulphate or magnesium oxide are used as ’near perfect’ reference white standards (a perfect standard of pure white would have a reflectance of 1,00 at any wavelength of light). The absence of any light in a vacuum is used as reference black standard.

OBS

Samples (such as substrates, inks, etc.) are tested against the standards under similar illumination.

OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Space Physics
  • Optics
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Quotient of the luminous flux incident on an infinitesimal element of a surface containing the point under consideration, by the area of that element.

CONT

Illuminance (usually ’E’ in formulas) is the total amount of visible light illuminating (incident upon) a point on a surface from all directions above the surface. This "surface" can be a physical surface or an imaginary plane. Therefore illuminance is equivalent to irradiance weighted with the response curve of the human eye.

OBS

Standard unit for illuminance is Lux (lx) which is lumens per square meter (lm/m²). There are several older units of illuminance: footcandle: 1 fc = 10.764 lx; phot: 1 ph = 10 000 lx. Typical illuminance values are: 1 lx = full moon; 10 lx = street lighting; 100-1 000 lx = workspace lighting; 10 000 lx = surgery lighting; 100 000 lx = plain sunshine.

OBS

"Illumination" is a deprecated term for "illuminance".
