DEF

A carving or line drawing on rock, especially one made by prehistoric people.

CONT

Petroglyphs are images incised in rock, usually by prehistoric, especially Neolithic, peoples. They were an important form of pre-writing symbols, used in communication from approximately 10, 000 B. C. to modern times, depending on culture and location. The word comes from the Greek words "petros" meaning "stone" and "glyphein" meaning "to carve"... The term "petroglyph" should not be confused with "pictograph, "which is an image drawn or painted on a rock face.

DEF

OBS

In contrast, most heartwood and the dried sapwood of spruce, hemlock, and some Douglas-fir are difficult to treat by pressure processes.... To obtain better penetration, squared heartwood cross-arms, poles, and bridge timbers are incised before treatment by passing them between a series of toothed rollers.

Wood that is resistant to penetration by preservatives is often incised before treatment to permit deeper and more uniform penetration. In works of art, a created texture may be a major expressive element. The marks of the woodcarver's gouge, the contrast between polished marble and the surrounding rough original material, and the dappling left by the silversmith's hammer are only three examples. Strong side texture lighting is exactly what is required to bring out incised relief carving, while smooth texture lighting is essential for an object of polished obsidian.
