One of the most important pieces of coal mining technology to be used in the Lethbridge area was the inclined railway. Built in 1885, the inclined railway transported coal from the river bottom drift mines up to the prairie level tipples, where the coal was sorted and then shipped away by rail. There were several types of inclined railways. Some inclines were powered by a steam engine with a circular cable spun on two tracks while other smaller inclines used horse power or stationary steam engines on single tracks.

The different types of cable supported bridges are distinctively characterized by the configuration of the cable system. The suspension system... comprises a parabolic main cable and vertical or slightly inclined hanger cables connecting the stiffening girder to the main cable. The cable stayed system... contains straight cables connecting the stiffening girder to the pylons.

Bridges that depend on high-strength steel cables as major structural elements may be classified as suspension bridges, specifically as cable-suspended or cable-stayed bridges - the fundamental difference is the manner in which the bridge deck is supported by the cables.

Note that the term "suspension bridge" may be confusing as per the authors consulted: the term seems to be used as a generic and as a specific all the same. It is less frequently used as a generic but it had been found so in a highly technical and recent source that can hardly be rejected.

A new type of bridge, the stayed girder bridge, was introduced in 1955. This is a long-span bridge with one or more towers that support light horizontal girders. The girders also are supported along their length by diagonal cables (stays) strung from the tower tops.
