DEF

A share that is similar to a preferred share, except that its price fluctuates very little, since dividends are fixed at about 65 to 75 per cent of the prime interest rate. Consequently, a floating-rate preferred share has the appearance of a bond, but from the point of view of the shareholders, the income generated from such shares is not declared as interest income(as in the case of a bond) but rather as a dividend that entitles the holder to a dividend tax credit.

OBS

The correct French equivalent is "action" in this context because "stock" and "share" are used interchangeably as a singular noun. However, "stock" is usually a collective noun, with "actions" as its French equivalent and "shares" as its synonym.

DEF

CONT

A laddered portfolio is comprised of several bonds, each with a successively longer term to maturity. For instance, in a 10-year laddered portfolio, [the investor] might purchase bonds that mature in one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and 10 years. When the first bond matures at the end of year one, [the investor] would reinvest in a bond that matures in ten years – and continue doing this every year. Each position in the portfolio is usually the same size as the next, with intervals between maturity dates roughly equal.

CONT

As the name suggests, a laddered bond portfolio is made up of several fixed income holdings,... Bonds close to maturity are reinvested back out at the long end(i. e. at the top of the "ladder") which will result in continuous rolling of the portfolio.

CONT

DEF

A conventional bond that has been separated by an investment dealer into its principal and interest components (i.e., the bond residual and the coupons), which are then sold separately to investors at a discounted value.

OBS

... where traders clip the coupons off a fixed-interest bond or note and then sell the principal and interest parts separately to two groups of investors. Those seeking current income buy the strip of coupons and those wanting a lump sum at maturity, and a capital gain, buy the principal or "corpus" portion. Because each portion is worth less than its whole before taxes, both are sold at a deep discount from their face values.

DEF

Given the assumption that financial soundness is desirable, a methodology of measuring it is proposed through modifying the approach used by credit-rating agencies of the bond market. The approach develops a profile and overall index of financial soundness, using accepted ratios relating to financial soundness. The separate aspects measured are : 1. the ability to attract capital, 2. the ability to weather a period of interrupted capital availability through sufficient liquid reserves, 3. the flexibility to select alternative types and sources of income, and 4. the control over cash flow.

The relationship between an immunization strategy, a maxmin strategy, and a duration strategy in a market in which investment income is subject to tax and investors are in more than one tax bracket is reexamined. The exact assumptions necessary for the duration strategy and the maxmin strategy to be equivalent in a world with taxes are clarified. In a world with taxes, the immunization strategy requires the portfolio to satisfy a constraint concerning the bond to be included besides the duration restriction.
