INCOME CURVE [9 records]

English

Subject field(s)
  • Statistics
CONT

This is the most commonly used measure of inequality. The coefficient varies between 0, which reflects complete equality, and 1, which indicates complete inequality(one person has all the income or consumption, all others have none). Graphically, the Gini coefficient can be easily represented by the area between the Lorenz curve and the line of equality.

OBS

Gini inequality index: designation extracted from the "Glossaire de l’économie" and reproduced with permission of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Statistique
DEF

DEF

With percentages from 0 to 100 on each axis, the curve shows the cumulative percentage relationships between two variables, one on each axis. The curve is used to measure the degree of departure from a uniform distribution in which 1% of one variable would be matched by 1% in the other variable. A completely uniform distribution would appear as a straight line of 45 °. The more hollow the curve, the more unequal the distribution. This curve is commonly used to show the effect of a tax on the distribution of income.

CONT

The Gini coefficient is used to measure the inequality of a Lorenz distribution. One of the famous uses of the Lorenz curve is the Pareto distribution.

DEF

CONT

The IS curve shows the combinations of output and the interest rate such that planned and actual expenditures on output are equal. Planned real expenditure depends positively on real income, negatively on the real interest rate, positively on government purchases of goods and services, and negatively on taxes.

OBS

The IS curve is often described as showing equilibrium in the goods market. But since supply is ignored, this is not an accurate description.
