Compound Slides(CS). A compound landslide is composed of a large host landslide... that encompasses smaller secondary landslides... The host landslide is a slow-moving landslide set on a gentle slope(<20°) of epiclastic materials. Its surface is irregular, with depressions, bulges, scarps and counterscarps and distensile, compressive and strike cracks. The movement of the host landslide can generate failures that favor secondary landslides located mostly along the steepest slopes of the host landslide(scarps and toe). Diverse types of secondary landslides may be observed on the same host landslide. Multiple levels of groundwater flow are commonly formed within compound landslides due to the presence of multiple low permeability surfaces(faults, cracks, material heterogeneities, and shear planes). An increase in the water table tends to accelerate host landslides and may contribute to secondary landslide failure. 1, record 1, English, - host%20landslide

A hydraulic fracture is formed by pumping the fracturing fluid into the wellbore at a rate sufficient to increase the pressure downhole to a value in excess of the fracture gradient of the formation rock. The pressure causes the formation to crack, allowing the fracturing fluid to enter and extend the crack farther into the formation. To keep this fracture open after the injection stops, a solid proppant, commonly a sieved round sand, is added to the fracture fluid. The propped hydraulic fracture then becomes a high permeability conduit through which the formation fluids can flow to the well. 2, record 10, English, - hydraulic%20fracture

Commute flow data for the Paris region, 1975 and 1982, reveal that the greatest decline occurred in the central city to central city flow, while the greatest increase occurred in outer suburb to inner suburb commutes. Other large increases took place in central city to outer suburbs, and inner suburbs to outer suburbs, implying a significant dispersion of travel flows and longer distance commutes, which in turn implies greater use of private vehicles(Jansen, 1993). 3, record 15, English, - inner%20suburb

Balloon cardiac catheters improve or restore coronary blood flow. Doctors often use this type of coronary intervention to inhibit the effects of coronary artery disease where dangerous plaque build-up clogs arteries that supply blood to the heart. After placement with a guide wire, an inflatable balloon sits on the tip of the catheter and expands inside the artery to increase coronary circulation, allow for stent placement and deflates for removal after the artery is opened... An over-the-wire balloon catheter has two lumens : one for the guide wire and the other for balloon inflation. The guide wire exists independent of the balloon so two operators must perform the coronary procedure. A criticism of the over-the-wire catheter includes increased radiation exposure due to increased fluoroscopy time during balloon placement. 1, record 20, English, - over%2Dthe%2Dwire%20balloon%20catheter

Second impact syndrome can result from even a very mild concussion that occurs days or weeks after the initial concussion. What is Second Impact Syndrome? In patients who sustain a second concussion when the first one has not fully healed, the brain loses its ability to auto regulate intracranial and cerebral perfusion pressure. This may lead to cerebral edema(severe swelling of the brain) and possible brain herniation. Loss of consciousness after the initial injury followed by secondary brain damage creates ionic fluxes, acute metabolic changes, and cerebral blood flow alterations. All of these characteristics enhance the vulnerability of the brain and greatly increase the risk of death, even if the second injury was far less intense. 1, record 24, English, - second%20impact%20syndrome

1, record 27, French, - %20th%C3%A9orie%20de%20la%20distorsion%20rapide

On forcing a cell suspension at high pressure through a narrow orifice, the rapid pressure drop provides a very powerful means of disrupting the cells. In practice it is simple to design equipment to subject the cell suspension to shear forces before releasing the pressure. By changing the pressure applied, cells may be disrupted completely or only sufficiently to release periplasmic enzymes.... [Experimentors have] used a liquid shear system for the disruption of chloroplasts. The suspension was passed through a needle valve at pressures up to 20, 000 p. s. i. and a flow rate of 10 ml/min. Under these conditions, rupture of E. coli was indicated by an increase in glutamic acid decarboxylase activity. 2, record 30, English, - liquid%20shear
Record number: 30, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In practical terms liquid shear is associated with the generation of heat. As a result subsequent increases in the temperature of the suspension of up to 40 °C may be encountered. Cell suspensions must, therefore, be introduced to the apparatus at 0-4°C to minimise loss of enzyme activity. If recycling is used then cooling before re-entry is essential. Equally, with this type of equipment the best results are obtained by using a homogeneous cell suspension. Irregular particle sizes owing to filamentous or pelleted growth modes reduce the efficiency of cell breakage. 3, record 30, English, - liquid%20shear

Phenomenon which arises as a result of the build-up of a layer of rejected solute at the membrane surface which impedes solvent flow. The resistance to flow due to this layer thus increases until a point is reached where the rate of diffusion of solute away from the polarization layer equals the rate of deposition. This phenomenon also explains why the solvent flux often becomes invariant with an increasing transmembrane pressure drop. Although solvent flux through a membrane is a hydraulic pressure-activated process and should increase with increasing pressure, a point is reached where the rate of build-up of the solute polarization layer is such that flow is impeded and further increases in pressure have no effect. 2, record 36, English, - concentration%20polarization

The spiral-wound reactor offers a number of advantages. It guides the flow through a number of organized flow channels which offer low and essentially equal hydraulic resistances. Therefore, all the fluid elements spend the same residence time in contact with the membrane unit thus ensuring good contact efficiency. A dihedral wing is producing equal lift on the port and the starboard wing in straight and level flight. If the starboard wing dips, it's vertical lift component will begin to increase and it's horizontal lift component will begin to decrease until the wing is parallel to the flow(trigonometry and the lift force components on your wing) and at the same time the vertical lift component on the port wing will decrease. Methods of CO2 transport. Pipelines today operate as a mature market technology and are the most common method for transporting CO2. Gaseous CO2 is typically compressed to a pressure above 8 MPa in order to avoid two-phase flow regimes and increase the density of the CO2, thereby making it easier and less costly to transport. CO2 also can be transported as a liquid in ships, road or rail tankers that carry CO2 in insulated tanks at a temperature well below ambient, and at much lower pressures. 4, record 44, English, - CO2%20transport

Vaned diffusers are used where importance is attached to the highest possible efficiency. By means of deflecting vanes in the diffuser guiding the flow in the radial direction, the velocity of the fluid can be reduced more than with a vaneless diffuser. In addition, the flow path through the forced deflection is shortened. Higher efficiencies and more compact geometries are obtained. Nevertheless, vaned diffusers also have disadvantages compared with vaneless ones : if the flow rate for a given vaned diffuser is much above the design flow rate, the profile losses increase considerably due to the high incidence angle. The efficiency then falls so steeply that operation is no longer purposeful. 2, record 47, English, - vaned%20diffuser

Canadian activity in remote sensing is becoming more and more international. This can be explained by the internationalization of environmental problems, funding sources and information flow. It is expressed through the increase of exchanges and cooperative programs in many directions : North-North, North-South and triangular. How can remote sensing activities work in this context? How is it possible to ensure quality and sustainability of the learning process in an extremely mobile context of international relations and governmental priorities? How can we set up cooperative projects based on mutual respect rather than on a dependence relationhsip? How is it possible to set up a training program in an international context?. The workshop will try to provide some answers to these questions by building on several international experiences and on learning from past errors. Further on the assessment of potential accidents, the Commission questioned whether the containment structure was adequate to contain the worst possible event. McMaster University explained that the building was designed to withstand an extremely low-probability event producing 60 pounds of steam(or an increase in pressure in the containment of 1/2 psi). The Commission questioned McMaster University on the nature of the accident scenarios used in the revised safety analysis. McMaster University responded that it looked at a number of events considered at other small Canadian research reactors, but concentrated on a very low probability event(10-6) that involves a blockage of cooling water flow through the core that leads to fuel damage. 1, record 52, English, - extremely%20low%2Dprobability%20event

The mechanics of MEOR at a molecular level are really quite simple, but must be thoroughly understood to assess both the efficiency and the efficacy of the process. The microbes in MEOR are simply hydrocarbon-utilizing, non-pathogenic microorganisms which are endemic to, and are naturally-occurring in petroleum reservoirs. What this means is, they naturally exist in reservoirs, are safe for plants, animals and humans, and ingest hydrocarbons as a food source which they metabolize. As a result of this "digestive" process, they then excrete bio-products such as alcohols, gases, acids, surfactants and polymers, which because of their origin are all natural and non-toxic.... Changes in the Crude [:] The gases excreted by the microorganisms go immediately into solution in the crude, making it a solution gas drive reservoir once again. The gases, solvents and weak acids cause a reduction in the viscosity and the pour point of the crude, and an increase in its API(or specific) gravity. These three changes cause the oil to be thinner and to flow more freely. Some of the microorganisms inhibit the activity of SRB's, or sulfate-reducing bacteria, which also occur naturally in reservoirs, but cause corrosion in metal parts and produce the deadly H2S(hydrogen sulfide) gas. Changes in the Reservoir Rock [:] The surfactants, acids and solvents clean out the paraffin wax and the heavy crude depositions in the pores of the rock improving the permeability and partially restoring the original porosity of the rock. The polymers help modify the permeability of the rock by reducing the size of the molecules of reservoir fluids, and help prevent and control water-coning problems. The acids, solvents, alcohols and surfactants remove metal traces from the poral throats of the rock, helping to restore the original porosity and permeability of the reservoir rock. 3, record 53, English, - microbial%20enhanced%20oil%20recovery

Oilfields, after a certain production period, are then called mature fields. Mature fields are those where the recovered oil fraction is close to the final recovery factor. Its mature phase is generally accompanied by an increasing production of water or gas, plus the aging of surface and subsurface equipment. To revitalize mature fields, a series of technologies is developed to increase the final recovery factor through treatments on a field(the so-called tertiary petroleum recovery) or well(stimulation, recompletion, treatments and logging) scale, in addition to optimizing the techniques relating to oil lift, its surface flow and treatment. 2, record 54, English, - mature%20field%20revitalization

Many mature gas fields also have a fairly significant production decline, especially when development drilling has come to an end. These mature fields can be revitalized in many ways. In some instances, efforts are focused on the reservoir with further drilling to drain potentially unswept hydrocarbons with infill wells or horizontal laterals. The horizontal drilling might be from new wellbores or wells that are currently temporarily abandoned or near their economic limit. With the increase in horizontal-well activity, there is an abundance of new technology with advances in gravel-pack design, underbalanced drilling with coiled tubing, and coiled-tubing fracturing. Besides these production improvements, operators are revamping both downhole and surface facilities to help breathe new life into older fields. Advances are taking place in the areas of artificial lift, intelligent-well completions, expandable tubulars, and others. 3, record 54, English, - mature%20field%20revitalization

Influent flow control to increase the pollution load treated during rainy periods... As for the system management, the French Decree of 22 December 1995 states that flows or pollution loads exceeding the reference capacity of the treatment plant may be temporarily admitted. This is especially interesting in the case of separate wastewater sewerage, as inappropriate connections of runoff water and rainfall induced infiltration cause hydraulic overloads in such networks. An automated influent flow control has been implemented on a 8000 population equivalent plant to admit a maximum of twice the dry weather peak flow : the clarifier is then dynamically managed so that neither sludge loss nor degradation through anoxic conditions may occur. 2, record 63, English, - dry%20weather%20peak%20flow

A supercharger which is located between the carburetor outlet and the intake manifold of the engine is called an internal supercharger. A supercharger thus located serves to provide a uniform distribution of the fuel-air charge to the various cylinders, as well as to increase the density of the charge. Maintaining a high manifold pressure ahead of the intake valves allows the use of "valve overlap" in the engine, so that the intake valve opens just before the exhaust valve closes at the end of the exhaust stroke. This allows the compressed mixture from the intake manifold to scavenge the spent gases out of the clearance volume of the cylinder and also tends to improve the cooling of the exhaust valve. This cooling is of particular importance when operating at "military" or "take-off" power. With no supercharging between the carburetor and the intake valves, "valve overlapping" would permit exhaust gases to flow back into the intake manifold. This would cause backfiring and dilution of the next charge of mixture with burned exhaust gases. 4, record 68, English, - internal%20supercharger

Latex bearing plants of the Euphorbiaceae family usually contain, in addition to rubber, important levels of highly reduced constituents. However the molecular weight of these products is too high to allow for a direct use as fuels and/or feedstocks. We examined the pyrolysis of the latex and of the heptanic extract of Euphorbia tirucalli, a species commonly growing in East Africa. Pyrolyses were carried out under an inert gas flow, in the absence or in the presence of various zeolites.... The zeolitic catalysts-improve the yield of volatile products from the extract-influence the relative abundance of the volatile constituents of the pyrolysates-strongly increase the hydrocarbon level, especially from latex, in the low and medium volatility fraction. 1, record 77, English, - zeolitic%20catalyst

A stationary and non-accelerating flow is described with du/dt=dv/dt=0. With this,(7-3) becomes a set of differential equations for u, v whose solution yields the Ekman spiral. However, if we are not interested in accurate solutions and consider one layer only, we can see the meaning of the friction force as first shown by C. M. Guldberg and H. Mohn in 1883. The wind profile near the earth's surface is usually convex, if represented on a graph with wind speed versus height. The wind speed increases from zero at the earth's surface to significant values near the anemometer level, and further increase of wind speed with height continues at a slower rate. In this situation, the second derivatives of u and v may be assumed proportional to-u and-v, respectively : 2, record 78, English, - anemometer%20level

Where the enzyme is expensive then the extra cost of immobilization, with its attendant promise of catalyst re-use, may be less than the cost of continually adding more enzyme to the reaction system. Thus the criterion of re-use of enzyme is important; so too is the stability of the immobilized enzyme in relation to the average residence time of substrate within the reactor. In order to obtain a high yield of product a balance must be struck between flow rate, reactor volume, and enzymic activity. High flow rates and small reactor volumes will give a small residence time and thus, for high product yield, will require a highly active enzyme preparation. Increasing the reactor volume will increase the residence time but will, at least in the case of the packed bed reactor, increase the quantity of immobilized enzyme required and thus the cost of the process. 1, record 90, English, - residence%20time
Record number: 90, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In an idealized reactor, all the fluid elements would spend the same time in the reactor. But in most real reactor systems, there would be a distribution of residence times of different fluid elements due to nonideal flow characteristics. Thus, space time is a parameter which describes only the macroscopic flow behavior. 2, record 90, English, - residence%20time

1, record 90, French, - temps%20de%20s%C3%A9jour

Most commercial plants have at least six columns in the reactor battery controlled by microprocessor feedback devices. While increasing the number of reactors provides greater operational flexibility and minimal flow rate variation, it is nevertheless important to accept the resulting higher costs for reactor piping, valves, and instrumentation. There is also a marginal increase in operational costs due to more frequent catalyst changes. 1, record 91, English, - reactor%20battery

Thrust augmentation system developed by de Havilland Aircraft of Canada to increase vertical lift characteristics of proposed supersonic short takeoff and vertical landing fighter aircraft. Basically, an ejector mixes a secondary flow of air with the primary flow from a turbofan engine within an encasing shroud. This has the effect of increasing the thrust by 50 to 100 percent. Augmented primary thrust is ejected through a nozzle. When the ejector is within or part of the fuselage, it is referred to as a fuselage ejector, or fuselage ejector lift. 1, record 98, English, - ejector%20lift%2Fvectored%20thrust
