Normal thermal stratification of a pond, if it is to occur, generally begins in May or early June and ends in September or early October. Ponds can stratify because water attains maximum density at 39°F. It becomes less dense (lighter in weight) both above and below 39°F. Soon after the ice melts in the early spring, the water temperature throughout the pond rises to 32°F. Winds blowing across the pond’s surface cause the water to pile up on the downwind side. The water moves downward, across the pond bottom, to the upwind side. The entire pond begins to circulate from top to bottom, maintaining a uniform temperature. As long as winds are strong enough, the pond temperature will remain uniform, even as the pond begins to warm during spring. This is a period known as "spring overturn." 5, record 21, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 21, Textual support number: 2 CONT
When surface water reaches 39 degrees in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of surface water forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. The resulting circulation of water is called spring turnover. Spring winds also help promote water circulation. 2, record 21, English, - spring%20overturn

turnover : A phenomenon usually occurring in spring and fall because of the increase in density of water above and below the temperature of minimum density. In the spring, as the surface of the water warms above the freezing point, the water increases in density, becomes heavier, and tends to sink, producing vertical currents, while in the fall, as the surface water becomes colder and therefore heavier, it also tends to sink. Mothballing is the process of stabilizing a facility so that no damage occurs to the facility should it make sense at a later time to incur the capital expenditures associated with continuing to operate, extending the life, or repowering the facility. Typically, a decision to mothball a facility might be made as a hedge against, or in anticipation of, changes in market conditions; i. e., increases in relative fuel prices, or an increase in the value of installed capacity.... Typical activities involved in mothballing a facility might include the following types of activities intended to preserve existing equipment :-’Racking Out’ or removal and storage of motor control center circuit breakers or 'switchgear’(this would also be done for a facility that has been retired and is scheduled for dismantling)-Placing a heat source or desiccants in the furnace to maintain a temperature above the dew point(at which condensation collects and corrodes the boiler structures.)-The application of grease or other coatings to reduce corrosion of components such as pumps and motors.-The installation of an air desiccant system to blow dry air through the steam turbine, condenser, boiler tubes and pipes. 2, record 22, English, - mothballing

... a soil/duff drought index [developed by Keetch and Byram (1968]) that ranges from 0 (no drought) to 800 (extreme drought) and is based on soil capacity of 8 inches of water. Record number: 41, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The Keetch Byram Drought Index(KBDI) provides a daily measure of soil dryness, which, in turn, gives an indication of water stress in plants. The KBDI represents the net effect of precipitation and evapotranspiration in producing cumulative moisture deficiency in deep duff or upper soil layers. The KBDI has a range from 0(no drought or soil moisture deficiency, i. e. soil at field capacity) to 2000(extreme drought, maximum soil moisture deficiency possible). The index can be viewed as the amount of rain needed to bring the soil back to saturation, with one mm of rain reducing the index by 10 points. The 0-2000 point scale is divided into three drought classes : 0-999=Low; 1000-1499=Moderate; 1500-2000=High. The KBDI is simple to calculate as it uses only two, daily weather observations-maximum temperature and 24-hour rainfall. The system functions in a book-keeping fashion where estimates of daily evapo-transpiration and measurements of precipitation increase or decrease the value of yesterdays index. The KBDI by itself is not a Fire Danger Rating System as it gives no indicate of the ease of ignition of the vegetation, or of the rate of fire spread, fire intensity and difficulty of control. It does however serve as a useful measure of drought occurrence. 7, record 41, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index

Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI): ... 0 - 200: Soil moisture and large class fuel moistures are high and do not contribute much to fire intensity. Typical of spring dormant season following winter precipitation. 200 - 400: Typical of late spring, early growing season. Lower litter and duff layers are drying and beginning to contribute to fire intensity. 400 - 600: Typical of late summer, early fall. Lower litter and duff layers actively contribute to fire intensity and will burn actively. 600 - 800: Often associated with more severe drought with increased wildfire occurrence. Intense, deep burning fires with significant downwind spotting can be expected. Live fuels can also be expected to burn actively at these levels. 9, record 41, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index

A cause of non-ideal flows in biochemical reactors. It is caused by excessive pressure drops, irregular packing of the support and the uneven application of the substrate to the column. Thus the fluid tends to find a preferential path through the column, usually down one side when friction of substrate with packing material is greater than that with the walls, or down the centre of the column when friction of substrate with the walls slows fluid flow. Therefore some of the particles in the column do not come into contact with the substrate, and contact with the rest of the particles is variable. 2, record 47, English, - channelling

In stirred reactors, better mixing can only be achieved by increasing the stirrer speed, by decreasing the viscosity of the substrate or the concentration of biocatalyst particles, or by baffling the reactor more efficiently. In packed-bed reactors, back-mixing, channelling and temperature gradients within the reactor are the most important causes of deviations from plug-flow behaviour and are expressed as the increase in reactor size needed to achieve the required productivity... Plug-flow is encouraged by the use of evensized, smooth, spherical, evenly packed support particles and by the absence of accumulated solids or gases in the column. 3, record 47, English, - channelling

Irradiation-induced swelling, also known as void swelling(VS), occurs in austenitic stainless steels and nickel-base alloys during neutron bombardment. Voids grow due to the migration and condensation of vacancies on the void nuclei(which can be gas bubbles) leading to an increase In material volume. This phenomenon is dependent on temperature, neutron flux, and neutron fluence. Swelling is typically a concern for fast reactors at temperatures above 350°C(662°F). 1, record 59, English, - irradiation%2Dinduced%20swelling

Now consider what happens when air is flowing by a total air temperature probe on an aircraft. If the aircraft is effectively stationary, the probe will measure the static air temperature T... due to the average thermal motion of the air molecules hitting it. If the aircraft has a true air speed,... the temperature measured by the probe will clearly increase because of the extra translational energy of the air molecules hitting it. 5, record 64, English, - temperature%20sensing%20probe

The Controlled Products Regulations describe technical criteria for identifying materials which are classified as dangerously reactive. A dangerously reactive material can react vigorously : with water to produce a very toxic gas; on its own by polymerization or decomposition; or under conditions of shock, or an increase in pressure or temperature. A dangerously reactive material may cause a fire, explosion or other hazardous condition. It is very important to know which conditions(such as shock, heating or contact with water) may set off the dangerous reaction so that appropriate preventive measures can be taken. 3, record 65, English, - dangerously%20reactive%20material

A thermal relief valve is similar to a regular system relief valve; however, such valves are installed in parts of the hydraulic system where fluid pressure is trapped and may need to be relieved because of the increase caused by higher temperatures. During the flight of an airplane, it is quite likely that fluid in many of the hydraulic lines will be at a low temperature. When the airplane lands, this cold fluid will be trapped in the landing-gear system, the flap system, and other systems, because selector valves are in the neutral or OFF position. The fluid-temperature increase owing to warm air on the ground results in fluid expansion and could cause damage unless thermal relief valves are adjusted to pressures which are above those required for the operation of the systems; hence they do not interfere with normal operation. 2, record 66, English, - thermal%20relief%20valve

Gaseous CO2 is typically compressed to a pressure above 8 MPa in order to avoid two-phase flow regimes and increase the density of the CO2, thereby making it easier and less costly to transport. The thermometric element is most commonly either a bimetal strip or a Bourdon tube filled with a liquid. In the first case the bimetal element has the form of a helical coil with one end rigidly fastened to the instrument and the other to the recording pen. In the second case the tube is made with an elliptical cross section so that an expression of the liquid caused by a temperature increase will cause the radius or curvature of the bend to increase, thus moving the instrument pen, which is fastened to the tip of the tube. A resistance thermometer and a thermoelectric thermometer may be converted into thermographs if provision is made to record their output. 6, record 77, English, - thermograph

The micro-WIS(Micro Wireless Instrumentation System) consists of tiny autonomous sensors for data acquisition... This HTD [Head-of-Train Telemetry Device] is designed to demonstrate the micro-WIS transmitter and recorder. One of the objectives of this HTD is to obtain meaningful real-time measurements for use in the orbiter's Environmental Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) operations. The micro-WIS transmitter's simultaneous real-time measurements of air cabin temperatures in many interior compartments of the orbiter will help ECLSS operations personnel address issues encountered on STS-88 and early International Space Station flights. Currently, only one temperature reading in the aft flight deck of the orbiter is available for adjusting model predictions for real-time environments. Micro-WIS will also reduce the time it takes the crew to obtain on-orbit temperature measurements and will increase the capability to monitor temperatures over long periods.... Micro-WIS data will also be used to validate cabin air temperature models that are used to make critical predictions of the dew point on early ISS [International Space Station] missions, which is important because orbiter cabin air exerts a significant influence on the entire station volume. Although the physical configuration of the air ducts in the orbiter cabin has been changed significantly, the sensors have remained the same and some temperature data has never been available. 3, record 80, English, - micro%2Dwireless%20instrumentation%20system

Water vapour pressure is the atmospheric pressure which is exerted by water vapour(water in its gaseous state). It is one way of measuring the humidity of the air. At a given temperature, an increase of water vapour in the air corresponds to an increase in the humidity of the air. Water vapour is supplied to the atmosphere by evaporation of water from oceans, lakes, wet land surfaces or from vegetation(transpiration). Water vapour absorbs the sun's radiation. As a result, the sunlight received at the earth's surface will be more intense in a drier atmosphere. 6, record 81, English, - water%20vapour%20pressure

reactive (reactivity): As applied to a chemical species, the term expresses a kinetic property. A species is said to be more reactive or to have a higher reactivity in some given context than some other (reference) species if it has a larger rate constant for a specified elementary reaction. The term has meaning only by reference to some explicitly stated or implicitly assumed set of conditions. It is not to be used for reactions or reaction patterns of compounds in general. The term is also more loosely used as a phenomenological description not restricted to elementary reactions. réactif (réactivité) : Lorsqu'ils se rapportent à des espèces chimiques, ces termes expriment une propriété cinétique. 2, record 86, French, - temp%C3%A9rature%20des%20%C3%A9lectrons

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. In the heat of a fire, however, the air within the chamber expands faster than it can escape through the metering hole. This expansion causes the pressure within the chamber to increase, forcing the metal diaphragm against contact points in the alarm circuit. An alarm signal to the system control unit results. This type of detector is most often combined in one unit that also has fixed-temperature capability. 1, record 89, English, - pneumatic%20rate%2Dof%2Drise%20spot%20detector

1, record 89, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20ponctuel%20thermov%C3%A9locim%C3%A9trique%20pneumatique

James Six's combined maximum and minimum thermometer... consists of a U-tube, the bend of which is filled with mercury. One leg contains spirit above the mercury and terminates in a bulb also full of spirit. The other leg also contains a column of spirit above the mercury, but terminates in a bulb containing air and vapour of spirit mixed. With increase of temperature the spirit in the full bulb expands; the mercury in consequence is pushed round the bend and rises to a greater or less extent in the other leg, carrying before it a steel index which thus marks the maximum temperature. With cold the spirit in the full bulb contracts, and the mercury moves back carrying with it a second index which marks the minimum temperature. The instrument is set by drawing down the two indices upon the two ends of the mercury column by means of a magnet. 3, record 91, English, - Six%26rsquo%3Bs%20thermometer

4, record 91, French, - thermom%C3%A8tre%20Six

Zones of Water Pollution. Discharge or mixing zone is where pollutants enter the stream or the river. If the waste is dark, it will make the water dark, increase its temperature and subsequently oxygen levels will drop. The rate of discharge should not be stronger than flow of the stream. In zone of degradation oxygen levels drop from BOD(biological/biochemical oxygen demand). Zone of active decomposition is characterized by the following changes : 1) dissolved oxygen(DO) will be at its absolute minimum; 2) odors and gases bubbling up. In the zone of recovery the river will slowly restore its oxygen through aeration process. The anaerobic conditions will disappear. Nitrites will be converted into nitrates and stimulate growth of algae, which will produce oxygen through process of photosynthesis. In zone of clean water oxygen levels are really elevated. And BOD is almost satisfied. 1, record 96, English, - zone%20of%20degradation

2, record 98, French, - fluide%20dilatant
