Paleoclimate studies using AMS [Accelerator Mass Spectrometry] radiocarbon... During the past several years, AMS measurements have increasingly supplanted the traditional counting method of dating since they offer greatly increased sensitivity(sub-milligram samples can be dated) and, in many instances, greater accuracy; they are also very much faster. However, the typical "bulk carbon" sample preparation techniques used for both AMS and... counting leave unanswered the question of just what is being dated, a grave disadvantage in palynological and other paleoclimate studies. In contrast, the extraction procedures that have been developed here typically produce purified pollen samples which can be clearly identified under the microscope; thus, an unambiguous proxy climate indicator-pollen-is dated, and nothing else. 2, record 1, English, - proxy%20climate%20indicator

In the last 10-15 years many analytical advances in X-ray fluorescence analysis(XRF) have taken place, giving rise to non-destructive ultrasensitive surface analyses of materials. One of the variants of XRF developed is micro-XRF(5-XRF), which is able to analyse the distribution of major, minor and trace elements in microscopic sample surface areas. Due to the availability of commercial instrumentation and the development of simple devices for focusing X-rays, 5-XRF has increased in popularity and is able to fill the gap between bulk X-ray fluorescence and electron probe X-ray microanalysis(EPXMA). 1, record 5, English, - microscopic%20x%2Dray%20fluorescence

3, record 6, French, - rapport%20signal%20%C3%A0%20bruit

Multiplex DNA sequencing : The increasing demand for DNA sequences can be met by replacement of each DNA sample in a device with a mixture of N samples so that the normal throughput is increased by a factor of N. Such a method is described. In order to separate the sequence information at the end of the processing, the DNA molecules of interest are ligated to a set of oligonucleotide "tags" at the beginning. The tagged DNA molecules are pooled, amplified, and chemically fragmented in 96-well plates. The resulting reaction products are fractionated by size on sequencing gels and transferred to nylon membranes. These membranes are then probed as many times as there are types of tags in the original pools, producing, in each cycle of probing, autoradiographs similar to those from standard DNA sequencing methods. 1, record 11, English, - multiplex%20DNA%20sequencing
