A lower energy intake rather than greater maintenance requirements or lower energy efficiency explains the slow growth of [slow-growing] pigs. Incremental RDS [rapidly digestible-starch] intake increased fat deposition more than SDS [slowly digestible starch], whereas energy efficiency was not affected. Thus, feeding SDS instead of RDS does not improve growth efficiency but may result in slightly leaner pigs. 1, record 1, English, - slow%20growth

5, record 3, French, - somatotrophine%20bovine

We found that cleaning scab-infected wheat on a gravity table before storage increased the storability of 20% moisture wheat by 12 to 43%. In our corn storage tests, even though we used varieties that were believed to have wide genetic differences, the chemical compositions were too similar for our model that predicts sotrability from composition to work well. Also, we found that storability rankings(best to worst) were not consistent from one year to the next. Our machine vision work resulted in development of a new on-line calibration procedure that gives us more consistent readings under changing lighting conditions; a procedure for quantifying mold coverage on corn kernels; and a batch analysis procedure for analyzing kernel mechanical damage that is much simpler and faster, but only slightly more variable than analyzing kernels one at a time. 2, record 10, English, - gravity%20table

Compaction mould samples. During desiccation events a soil will experience shrinkage induced stresses. These stresses are likely to slightly alter the grain orientation, residual stress and density of the soil in a similar manner to altering the compaction parameters. The associated effects of this density change have been simulated through the use of artificially made samples. The approach examined the effect of different compaction density and moulding water content upon the soil suction-water content relationship(ie the water retention characteristic).... it is evident that the water retention characteristic is shifted upwards as compaction density decreases and moulding water content increases. This means that the water content is increased for a given value of soil suction. 3, record 11, English, - moulding%20water%20content

This type of launch has the advantage of providing all-round air defence with a large number of ready-to-fire weapons, but it has the disadvantage(in countering sea-skimming missiles) that the distance flown to the intercept point is slightly increased. 1, record 13, English, - all%2Dround%20air%20defence

1, record 13, French, - tir%20dans%20toutes%20les%20directions

The system is based on a special landing gear called a jump strut, which works by giving the aircraft the proper attitude for take-off,.... First, the system extends the nose gear, raising the nose. A few milliseconds later, the main gear is activated(’jumps’) in its turn, increasing the distance between wheels and fuselage, while rotation continues. After a vertical leap of some 6ft, the aircraft slows and descends slightly because of the increased drag at the higher angle of attack. Finally, and virtually without a pause, the aircraft resumes its climb.... The jump strut is extended under pilot control by a nitrogen-charged actuator. Once fired, it is immediately vented to atmosphere to enable the gear to resume its normal shock-attenuating function should the take-off run have to be aborted. 1, record 16, English, - jump%20strut

[Spheroidal enrollment] is the commonest type, characterizing [...] in general most isopygous or macropygous trilobites. In the spheroidal mode, all the thoracic segments have an equal share in enrollment. As the gliding of the thoracic segments began, the articulating half-rings were progressively uncovered and the thoracic axis became increasingly convex longitudinally. At the same time the downward curvature of the distal parts of the pleurae increased and their extremities became more and more imbricated, overlapping each other. Also, the transverse curvature of the cephalon increased slightly by downward bending of the genal regions. When enrollment was complete, the pygidium touched the cephalon and the whole animal attained a subspheroidal shape, the overlapping distal parts of the thoracic pleurae forming a sort of continuous lateral closure. 1, record 17, English, - spheroidal%20enrollment

1, record 17, French, - enroulement%20sph%C3%A9ro%C3%AFde
