English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
  • Molecular Biology
CONT

Alternative splicing is a highly regulated process with the potential to express a splice variant only under specific spatio-temporal conditions.

CONT

Splice variants play an important role within the cell in both increasing the proteome diversity and in cellular function. Splice variants are also associated with disease states and may play a role in their etiology.

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique

CONT

Una variante de empalme del gen producía la proteína AIB1-Delta4, que resultó ser la responsable de promover la comunicación y el reclutamiento de las células circundantes, lo que finalmente conduce a la metástasis.

DEF

The insertion of piton into a crack by means of a hammer or by hands.

CONT

In hard, solid rock select a crack wide enough to admit one third to one half of the piton shaft before driving the piton in. The placing of pitons in soft, rotten rock is often not practical. When this type of rock must be scaled, loose rock from the crack should be removed before setting the piton.

CONT

Many of the skills of piton placing can be gained only by practice, and once again an occasional hour spent experimenting with pegs on a boulder can give valuable knowledge.

CONT

Placing Pitons : The placement of pitons is normally the function of the leader... Ideally, a piton should be inserted into a crack 1/2 to 2/3 of its length and driven hard to the hilt. A ringing sound, steadily increasing in pitch, usually indicates a solid piton.

OBS

Using pitons is known as "pegging" and taking them out is called "de-pegging". This English word is gradually replacing the French one in Britain.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sports de montagne
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
  • Physics of Solids
DEF

The temperature at which [the] crystals [of a pure substance] are in equilibrium with the liquid phase at atmospheric pressure.

CONT

The melting point of a substance should be considered a property of its crystalline form only. At the melting point the liquid and solid forms of a substance exist in equilibrium. All substances of crystalline nature have their characteristic melting points. For very pure substances the temperature range over which the process of fusion occurs is very small. The melting point of a pure crystalline solid is a function of pressure; it increases with increasing pressure for most substances. However, in the case of ice(and a few other substances) the melting point decreases with increasing pressure... Under a pressure of one standard atmosphere, the melting point of pure ice is the same as the ice point, that is, 0°C.

OBS

The melting point is the temperature at which a solid material becomes liquid. The freezing point is the temperature at which liquid material becomes a solid.

OBS

The term "melting point" (mp) is used when the equilibrium temperature is approached by heating the solid. Ordinarily refers to temperature above 0°C, the melting point of ice.

OBS

... melting point and freezing point are often used interchangeably depending on whether the substance is being heated or cooled.

CONT

Temperatures generally increase with increasing depth in the earth as heat from deep inside the earth escapes. The geothermal gradient is a measure of how rapidly the temperature increases as a function of depth. Because the Denver Basin area is currently relatively quiet in terms of volcanic and earthquake activity, one might expect the average geothermal gradient to be about 30 degrees C/km. This means that, on average the temperature increases 30 degrees C for every kilometer drilled into the Denver Basin.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Statistique
  • Thermodynamique
CONT

  • Landing Gear (Aeroindustry)
CONT

The system is based on a special landing gear called a jump strut, which works by giving the aircraft the proper attitude for take-off,.... First, the system extends the nose gear, raising the nose. A few milliseconds later, the main gear is activated(’jumps’) in its turn, increasing the distance between wheels and fuselage, while rotation continues. After a vertical leap of some 6ft, the aircraft slows and descends slightly because of the increased drag at the higher angle of attack. Finally, and virtually without a pause, the aircraft resumes its climb.... The jump strut is extended under pilot control by a nitrogen-charged actuator. Once fired, it is immediately vented to atmosphere to enable the gear to resume its normal shock-attenuating function should the take-off run have to be aborted.
