In Canadian constitutional law, cooperative federalism is understood as both a descriptive concept and a legal principle.... As a legal principle, it serves as a guide for constitutional interpretation in division of powers cases. Cooperative federalism is to be "given due weight", meaning that sections 91 and 92 of the Constitution Act, 1867 should be read to allow for "interplay, indeed overlap" between spheres of federal and provincial authority and to favour "the application of valid rules adopted by governments at both levels" over enforcing strict jurisdictional silos. 2, record 1, English, - cooperative%20federalism

Homologous recombination is that which we are taught about in introductory biology class. It is the crossing-over process observed during meiosis, though it occurs in bacteria as well. The process involves pairing up of similar DNA sequences, with then one sequence replacing the other, or indeed for meiotic crossing over, with the generation of now two recombinant strands, one for each chromosome homolog, rather than just one. In either case, key is that it is DNA that is highly similar in terms of DNA sequence that is being either replaced or swapped. This allows for a replacement of alleles following horizontal gene transfer, or allele swapping... 2, record 2, English, - homologous%20recombination

The gastrointestinal(GI) tract of mammals is home to a large number and high diversity of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, viruses, and fungi, which together build a complex micro-ecosystem and shape the host's physiology[. Many] studies have focused on the role of bacteria in the gut microbiome while overlooking the intestinal fungi, partly because of the low abundance of the latter, as they account for only 0. 01–0. 1% of the whole community... However, accumulating evidence suggests that the fungal community, also referred to as the mycobiota, is indeed an important member of the microbiota, thereby requiring detailed characterization... the gut mycobiota has also been implicated in various pathologies, particularly in intestinal inflammation and infection. 3, record 3, English, - intestinal%20mycobiota

Skin-fermented or skin-contact white wines are white wines that have had extended contact with grape skins. This is unique, because typically, white wines do not spend time on their skins during fermentation. When white wine grapes are pressed, only the juice is fermented. Whereas, when red wines and rosés are fermented and pressed, they spend time on the skins (much less time for rosés than for reds). This extended skin contact is what gives wines their color and tannin. [They are] often known as "orange wines" due to their color ... 8, record 4, English, - orange%20wine

Though mitigation policies are being put in place, it appears that the only sustainable solution would be to actively clean the near-Earth orbits. For the last decade, political, economic and legal obstacles have been slowing down the implementation of space debris removal.... Most of the objects are less than 1 cm(0. 39 inches) in diameter. This also includes dust from solid rocket motors, paint chips and other small debris that flaked from satellite systems. Many systems that include nets, large sails and other structures are only effective for objects that can be grasped and provide poor capture of on-orbit debris for subsequent de-orbit and, indeed, can be damaged by other impacts, contributing to the debris problem on orbit. 4, record 6, English, - space%20debris%20removal

The mouth bow is the simplest stringed instrument, named so because it indeed takes the form of a small bow upon which a string made of fibre or reed is stretched.... To play it, one end of the string is held between the musician's lips, while it is plucked by the musician or struck with a thin twig. In this way the mouth works as a sound box. By expanding or contracting the oral cavity and by slightly opening the lips, harmonics can be created. Using another stick the player can damp the string, thus shortening it and producing a higher tone. In this way two fundamentals can be produced. 2, record 11, English, - mouth%20bow

Originally, keyboard tablatures must have suggested a practical link to the keys of the instrument. Indeed, the anonymous tenth-century Bern organ treatise... describes the presence of pitch names, for the performer's visual reference, written directly on the keys of the organ. If letters of the alphabet could be used in this way, it is just as conceivable that numbers could have been used in a similar manner. Thus, the origin of "German" keyboard tablatures may be associated with the practice of lettered keys, and the origin of "Spanish" tablatures may, at least hypothetically, be associated with numbered keys. 2, record 13, English, - keyboard%20tablature

A standard medical approach, indeed a common lay-person's approach, to thinking about disability involves viewing it as a problem that exists in a person's body. As a consequence, that individual is thought to require treatment or care to fix the disability, to approximate normal functioning, or perhaps as a last measure, to help the individual adapt and learn to function despite the disability. So construed, disability is primarily an individual' s medical problem in need of treatment.... this medical model of disability holds that "a person's functional limitations(impairments) are the root cause of any disadvantages experienced and these disadvantages can therefore only be rectified by treatment or cure. Par contre, les adjectifs tels que «monoparoi», «monofeuillet», «biparoi», «bifeuillet», «multiparoi» et «multifeuillet» s'accordent en nombre avec le nom qu'ils qualifient. On écrirait donc «un nanotube biparoi» et «des nanotubes biparois». Ces adjectifs s'écrivent sans trait d'union. 1, record 20, French, - nanotube%20de%20carbone%20double%20paroi

... residence... has in many instances been employed by Judges and others to denote a person's habitual physical presence in a place or country which may or may not be his home. A person may have several residences in various countries; he can have... but one domicil, which, in reality, may not be and indeed may never have been his home. The distinction between domicil and residence is largely one of mental condition or intention; domicil is generally a question of intent, while residence is entirely a question of fact. 7, record 46, English, - residence

The ILO became the first specialized agency of the UN in 1946. The Organization is devoted to advancing opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security, and human dignity. The pig cycle is a widely recognised phenomenon and is caused by expansion of the breeding herd at times of high profitability, a subsequent increase in supply leading to overproduction, a decrease in price for finished pigs to clear the market and, if these conditions persist for long enough, a subsequent contraction of the breeding herd. The pig cycle is not an example of market failure, indeed it could be argued that the market works perfectly in terms of the transmission of price signals; it is the lag between signal and response that causes the inefficiencies. It is therefore actually the interaction of natural production cycles with perfectly competitive behaviour by producers rather than the inadequate provision of price information that results in resource misallocation. 2, record 53, English, - pig%20cycle

The basic defect of the receiving system was its high sensitivity to the reverberation generated by the set's very high power transmissions and the use of rapid scanning to achieve omnidirectional coverage on a single transmission. This effectively precluded the separation of reverberation and noise backgrounds during processing. The only solution to this problem lay in the use of preformed receiving beams(as in Type 177), which allowed this separation, and, indeed, allowed parallel processing of narrow-band channels(cross-correlation or matched-filter processing) to reduce detection threshold and extract [Doppler] information. 1, record 58, English, - narrow%2Dband%20channel

Symptoms in pigs include loss of appetite, fever, jaundice, and-in some cases-death. Pigs which have recovered excrete leptospirae for some time afterwards. The matchlock constituted the first mechanical device for firing.(...) For this improvement(...) two modifications of the hand cannon were necessary : the addition of a pan to hold the priming powder, which replaced the match in setting off the powder charge inside the barrel, and the addition of the serpentine, holding the match and thus freeing the hand of the shooter or his aide. These original matchlocks did not as yet include the leverage system worked by a trigger and indeed did, not have true "locks". Instead, the serpentine was a simple S-shaped arm pivoted in its center, the lower end serving as a handle by which the shooter moved the device manually. 1, record 63, English, - match

Charities can and do charge fees for their charitable programs, but when their fees are high enough that they exclude those in need of the service or provide a return above the break-even point, it raises the question of whether their purpose is indeed charitable.

3, record 74, French, - catalycit%C3%A9

If the buyer can bring himself within the principle of "Hall' s" case he may be entitled to recover not only his loss of profit on sub-sales(for that is what it comes to) but also any damages which he may have had to pay his sub-buyer in respect of his loss of profit, and indeed that of other sub-buyers in the string. Moreover, if the buyer has been sued by his sub-buyer and has had to pay damages and costs, he is entitled to claim from the seller the total sum he has had to pay in respect of damages and costs as well as a sum in respect of his own costs.(Atiyah, 5th ed., 1975, p. 309) 1, record 85, English, - sub%2Dsale

The [land titles legislation has] conferred on a registered proprietor of land what may be called a statutory estate, which is not a merely legal right, but a right both legal and equitable, which courts both of law and equity must recognize : the interest conferred is, indeed, expressly called an "estate", and consists of rights as nearly as possible resembling the rights of persons who have what is ordinarily called an "estate" in the land, but the new registered, or statutory, estate does not operate in the same manner, or on the same principles, as the ordinary "estate".(Anger and Honsberger, 2nd ed., 1985, p. 1608). 1, record 86, English, - statutory%20estate

That the knee can attain any degree of stability in extension, and indeed is not even more vulnerable, is due to the all-important quadriceps and to the complex action which differentiates the joint from a simple hinge-namely, the screw-home movement. This is the mechanism whereby, at the completion of extension, the tibia rotates laterally by the indirect action of the quadriceps, guided in its course by the anterior cruciate ligament and the form of the articular surfaces. The screw-home movement is an important feature of the knee-joint mechanism not only because it determines the stability of the joint in extension but because disorders of its complex action are responsible for most of the common internal derangements of the knee. 2, record 88, English, - screw%20home%20motion
