In a practical sense, sovereignty is also largely a matter of degree. Some States enjoy more power and independence than other States. This leads to the familiar distinction between independent or sovereign States, and non-independent or non-sovereign States or entities, for example, Protectorates and colonies. Even here it is difficult to draw the line, for although a State may have accepted important restrictions on its liberty of action, on other respects it may enjoy the widest possible freedom. "Sovereignty" is therefore a term of art rather than a legal expression capable of precise definition.

Pressure : direction of action.... a flat solid surface... the magnitude of the force due to pressure should be independent of the direction of the surface on which it acts. For instance, a thin flat plate in air will experience a zero resultant force due to air pressure since the forces due to pressure on its two sides have the same magnitude(the pressure is independent of the orientation of the surface on which it acts) and they point in opposite directions(each force acts normal to its own surface). We say that pressure is isotropic(based on Greek words, meaning equal in all directions, or more accurately in the present case, independent of direction).

In 1915 the Sperry Company, employing a two-frame gyroscope, devised a gyrostabilizer to reduce the rolling of ships, thus minimizing damage to cargo, reducing stresses in the hull structure, and adding to the comfort of passengers. The roll-reducing action of this type of gyrostabilizer was quite effective and was independent of the speed of the ship.

A machine designed for wrapping any container or article.

In most wrapping machines the loaves pass along a travelling band from the slicer, although the wrapper can be used independent of the slicer. As the loaves move along they pass under a roll of waxed wrapping paper, while two jaws move downwards and pick up the loaf inside a piece of paper of a size sufficient to enclose it, a self-measuring mechanism controlling this action. Then, by means of sliding plates which are timed so as to complete one operation after another, the paper is folded round the loaf. The loaf then travels along another band and passes between two plates, electrically heated, which melt the wax of the paper and so seal up the package.
