Record 1 2017-06-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Suspension Systems (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
CONT

Independent suspensions can be found in large numbers on both FWD [front-wheel drive] and RWD [rear-wheel drive] vehicles. The introduction of independent rear suspensions was brought about by the same concerns for improved traction ride that prompted the introduction of independent front suspensions. If the wheels can move separately on the road, traction and ride is improved.

OBS

independent suspension : term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee(New Brunswick).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Suspension Systems (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
CONT

Most modern automobiles use independent front-wheel suspension. The weight may be supported by either a coil spring, torsion bar, or air bag. In all cases the basic construction of the system is similar.

CONT

La plupart des automobiles modernes comportent une suspension avant à roues indépendantes. Dans ce cas, le poids est supporté par un ressort hélicoïdal, une barre de torsion ou un coussin pneumatique. La construction est fondamentalement la même quel que soit le système.

Jog carts, used only for training, are bigger and bulkier than a racing cart.... The shafts are normally made out of wood, but may be aluminum, steel or stainless steel. They have bigger seats which requires less athleticism to sit upon. The most modern styles provide full independent suspension by hydraulic dampers and progressive rate coil springs. These give both a smoother ride and higher speed than traditional types. They are also lighter.

A racing sulky weighs about 26 pounds. Training sulkies are heavier: about 55 pounds.
