By law, offenders designated by the court as "dangerous offenders" receive automatic indeterminate sentences. Although offenders serving an indeterminate sentence may not spend their entire lives in prison(i. e. they may eventually be paroled), they will remain under sentence, subject to control and supervision by Correctional Service Canada, for the rest of their lives. Parole eligibility in these cases is set, by law, at seven years. 3, record 2, English, - indeterminate%20sentence

When a person is sentenced to sex offender treatment as part of a plea bargain or sentencing, the therapy itself may become punishment. The person is ordered to attend treatment with an indeterminate sentence and usually cannot select the therapist or the program; therapy programs must be approved by the agencies in control. 4, record 4, English, - sex%20offender%20treatment

The treatment of sexual offenders in the community is a very important component in the quest to end sexual violence. The criminal law can only punish actual behaviour committed with the requisite criminal intent. The one exception to this general principle is the Criminal Code provision for indeterminate imprisonment of dangerous offenders. Although it may amount to preventive detention in some sense, this power is available only upon sentencing for a violent offence, and requires proof of a persistent pattern of violent criminal behaviour sufficient to justify a sentence of indeterminate life imprisonment. 1, record 5, English, - violent%20criminal%20behaviour

1, record 5, French, - comportement%20criminel%20violent
