Pour les applications opérationnelles il paraît illusoire de chercher à définir un critère numérique unique ayant une signification universelle. Par contre, si l'on se limite aux incidences des circonstances atmosphériques sur une catégorie particulière d'activités humaines, il est possible de combiner certains éléments climatiques de façon significative. Sur le plan agricole on peut citer, par exemple : - l'indice héliothermique de Geslin [...] - l'évapotranspiration potentielle [...] - le bilan potentiel ou déficit théorique, [...] On peut citer aussi l'indice d'érosion de Fournier égal au rapport entre le carré de la hauteur p des précipitations du mois le plus pluvieux et la hauteur annuelle P (p2/P). Cet indice traduit la capacité érosive du climat.
