Vegetation indices are usually derived from multispectral remote sensing observations. Since growing plants strongly reflect the wavelengths of light in the near-infrared, combinations of measurements in the near-infrared and visible-red portions of the spectra are used to generate a variety of different indices. Perhaps the most common vegetation index is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)... 2, record 4, English, - vegetation%20index

The first step in developing efficient and accurate algorithms for detecting skin in a hyperspectral image is understanding its reflectance properties. This article describes a simple model based on the layers and makeup of skin and how it absorbs and scatters light. Based on the insights gained from the modeled skin reflectance, we develop an efficient skin detection algorithm called the normalized difference skin index(NDSI), motivated by the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI). 2, record 5, English, - normalized%20difference%20skin%20index

6, record 16, French, - longueur%20d%27onde%20de%20la%20lumi%C3%A8re

In the present literature on ektacytometry small angle light scattering by ellipsoidal red blood cells is commonly approximated by Fraunhofer diffraction. Calculations on a sphere with the size and relative refractive index of a red cell, however, show that Fraunhofer diffraction deviates significantly from exact Mie theory. Anomalous diffraction is found to be a much better approximation. The anomalous diffraction theory is used to calculate the intensity distribution of the light scattered by an allipsoidally deformed red blood cell. The derived expression shows that the ellipticity of isointensity curves in forward scattered light are equal to the ellipticity of the red blood cell. The theoretical expression is fitted to the intensity patterns measured with an ektacytometer. For the small observation angles used in ektacytometry, the experimental results confirm the validity of the anomalous diffraction approach. 2, record 17, English, - ektacytometer

The speed of light in a vacuum is an important physical constant denoted by the letter c for "constant" or the Latin word "celeritas" meaning "swiftness". It is the speed of all electromagnetic radiations, including visible light, in a vacuum. More generally, it is the speed of anything having zero rest mass.... In metric units, the speed of light is exactly 299, 792, 458 metres per second(1, 079, 252, 848. 8 km/h). The fundamental SI unit of length, the metre, has been defined since October 21, 1983, as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299, 792, 458 of a second; any increase in the precision of the measurement of the speed of light would refine the definition of the metre, but not alter the numerical value of c. The approximate value of 3x108 m/s is commonly used in rough estimates. In imperial units, the speed of light is about 670, 616, 629. 2 miles per hour or 983, 571, 056 feet per second, which is about 186, 282, 397 miles per second, or roughly one foot per nanosecond. The speed of light when it passes through a transparent or translucent material medium, like glass or air, is slower than its speed in a vacuum. The ratio of c to the observed phase velocity is called the refractive index of the medium. 5, record 20, English, - speed%20of%20light

Graded-index multimode fiber contains a core in which the refractive index diminishes gradually from the center axis out toward the cladding. The higher refractive index at the center makes the light rays moving down the axis advance more slowly than those near the cladding. Also, rather than zig-zagging off the cladding, light in the core curves helically because of the graded index, reducing its travel distance. The shortened path and the higher speed allow light at the periphery to arrive at a receiver at about the same time as the slow but straight rays in the core axis. The result : a digital pulse suffers less dispersion. These fibers often become the physical medium for local-area networks. 2, record 29, English, - graded%2Dindex%20multimode%20fiber

2, record 29, French, - fibre%20multimode%20%C3%A0%20gradient%20d%27indice

The difference in refractive index between the sample and the reference produces a difference in optical path length and this is measured by the interferometer in fractions of light wavelengths. Laser Scintillometers. The fluctuations in atmospheric index of refraction is related to the temperature structure of the air. These index fluctuations cause deflections of light(for example, mirages) and these fluctuations can be examined by laser light travelling over a horizontal path. The resulting intensity of fluctuations can be analysed for a heat flux which could cause those index variations. A difficulty with the system is the fluctuations caused by mechanical turbulence such as wind may interfere with the thermal measurement. The system is inexpensive and may prove quite reliable. 1, record 36, English, - laser%20scintillometer
