CONT

An index is one of the facilities to be used in making a search for a record; its object is to point out the book and page in which a particular record may be found, and its utility and practical necessity are unquestioned. In many jurisdictions there are statutes requiring a recorder to keep an index of all deeds, mortgages, and other liens or encumbrances. (66 American Jurisprudence, 2nd ed., p. 395).

CONT

In property law, an index is generally defined as a means provided for pointing out or indicating where the record to a certain parcel of realty may be found.(Axelrod, Berger and Johnstone, 1971, p. 551).

OBS

the plural form is "indexes" or "indices".

OBS

Under the grantor-grantee or alphabetical index, pages are assigned in the index to each letter of the alphabet. As an instrument is received at the recorder's office, it is first recorded and then indexed under the name of the granting party on the appropriate page of the index. In addition, the county recorder is usually required to make notations on the grantor's page which disclose the name of the other party to the transaction, the book and page of the record where this particular transaction can be found, a description of the property, the date when the instrument was executed, the date when the instrument was filed for recordation, and the nature of the instrument. These same notations are then made as the transaction is indexed under the name of the grantee or the receiving party. After both steps have been completed, the instrument is considered to have been properly indexed.(Axelrod, Berger and Johnstone, 1971, p. 551).

Subject field(s)
  • Physics
DEF

The characteristic of a substance for which a physical property, such as index of refraction, varies in value with the direction in or along which the measurement is made.

CONT

There is a distinct directional anisotropy in microwave backscatter from the surface of the East Antarctic ice sheet as measured by the C-band wind scatterometer carried by the ERS-1 satellite. The anisotropy is characterised by an amplitude and an orientation which correspond to the amplitude of variation in backscatter coefficient with azimuth and the orientation or look direction for minimum backscatter respectively. The anisotropy is apparent in the differences between the backscatter measurements in the three look directions of the antennas of the instrument.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique
DEF

PHR

anisotropie brutale, discontinue, faible, forte, invariante d'échelle, molle, optique, structurale.

PHR

anisotropie d'effet capillaire, du cristal.

PHR

Subject field(s)

  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
CONT

Index Properties (soils). Includes mechanical analysis; evaluation of the liquid limit and plastic limit; determination of the specific gravity of the soil particles; compressive strength as determined on unconfined samples, and determination of the natural water content from undisturbed samples. The index properties enable comparisons being made between different soils, and the data can be related to the behaviour of soils.

CONT

... simple methods were described for identifying the major soil components ... They must be supplemented by other procedures leading to quantitative results that may be related to the physical properties with which the engineer is directly concerned ... the tests required for this purpose are known as classification tests, and the results as the index properties of the soils.

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
OBS

(...) there is much in common between the monoclinic-triclinic and intermediate stages of potash feldspar and albite. According to the proposal by "Slemmons"(1962), a "measure" of the amount of order may be indicated by the "intermediacy index"(I. I.) in which 0 equals the most disordered form, and 100 the most ordered form. The values intermediate between 0 and 100 thus indicate the relative position of any given measurement of physical or structural property that is sensitive to order-disorder.

French

Domaine(s)

OBS
