[The] Thornthwaite moisture index [is] a method for monitoring the soil water budget for relatively large areas based on the pioneering work of C. W. Thornthwaite(1948) using the concept of potential evapotranspiration. The Palmer Drought Severity Index and the companion "crop moisture index, "developed by W. C. Palmer, are modifications of the earlier Thornthwaite work.

C. W. Thornthwaite's third climate classification system(1955) included an Index of Average Annual Thermal Efficiency derived from potential evapotranspiration values. A significant component of Thornthwaite's classification was the Summer Concentration of Thermal Efficiency that measures the concentration of thermal efficiency accumulating in the three summer months as a percentage of the average annual potential thermal efficiency. The Thornthwaite index was chosen as a proxy to represent day length while at the same time considering topography and maritime influences.

L'indice d'aridité de C.W. Thornthwaite. Cet indice, utilisé par Thornthwaite dans sa classification des climats de 1948 pour exprimer le degré d'insuffisance en eau par rapport aux besoins hydriques en un site donné, est calculé à l'aide de l'expression : 100 d/h dans laquelle d (insuffisance hydrique) est la somme des écarts mensuels entre les précipitations et les évapotranspirations de référence des mois pour lesquels les normales des précipitations sont inférieures aux normales des évapotranspirations potentielles et h est la somme des valeurs de l'évapotranspiration de référence pour ces mêmes mois. Thornthwaite utilise cet indice d'aridité, soit comme composante de l'indice d'humidité, soit comme base d'une classification fine des climats humides (climats perhumide, humide et subhumide).

La faiblesse de la pluviosité ne suffit pas à caractériser l'aridité d'un climat, ou d'une région; il faut y associer d'autres facteurs climatologiques comme le rayonnement, la température, le vent et l'humidité de l'air.
