Geographic distribution. Flag smut of wheat has been reported from all continents(Purdy, 1965), and, being seed-borne, it has probably been introduced frequently into many regions. U. agropyri was important in parts of Australia, China, South Africa, northern Egypt, the Punjab of India and Pakistan, and in local parts of the U. S. Local farming practices and differences in the inherent resistance of wheats in a region influence the prevalence of flag smut, but climate is the main factor. 2, record 2, English, - flag%20smut%20of%20wheat

Scientific wheat breeding in Canada had its origin in 1903 when Dr. Charles Saunders(son of William Saunders, the founder of Canadian Experimental Farms) selected one head of Marquis wheat from across of the European variety, Red Fife, and a much earlier maturing, unknown variety of hard red spring wheat from Calcutta, India. Since that time, more sophisticated breeding techniques have evolved but the original challenge of man against nature continues to be ever present. 1, record 6, English, - Marquis%20wheat

World wheat area has stabilized at just over 228 million hectares. Yield per hectare has increased markedly in many countries over the past 25 years. For the United States, yield has increased by almost 60% and in China it has more than doubled. These increases are in distinct contrast to what is seen in a few other areas of the world where yields remain low. Improves soil and water management, fertilizer use, pest control, improved varieties, better choice of land, power machinery and other technological improvements have been major factors in increased yield. In recent years, yields in most countries have levelled off. In contrast, yields in India, Mexico, Pakistan and some other developing countries continue to rise. There is reason to believe that yields can be raised in nearly all countries by using modern agronomic practices based on agricultural research. 1, record 9, English, - world%20wheat%20area

1, record 9, French, - emblavures%20mondiales
