To increase their impact, veterans from across the country established a national association, the National Indian Veterans Association(NIVA) on 7 April 1981. Its first national convention was organized in 1986. In the 1990s, with help from the Native Council of Canada(now the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples), Aboriginal veterans have made renewed attempts to gain recognition of service and acknowledgement of the benefits they were denied. The National Aboriginal Veterans Associations(NAVA) was founded in 1992, with branches in many provinces. It has provided a forum for renewed discussion, research and calls for action. This Commission invited Aboriginal veterans and intervener groups such as NAVA to give testimony about Aboriginal veterans’ personal experiences.
