""Informant" is more general than "informer" and refers to any person who gives information in various fields, for example, a witness to a car accident. "Informer", in police terminology, is more specific and more closely equivalent to the French "indicateur. "

When French brokers ask how the market is doing today, it is the "indicateur de tendance" they are talking about. The French trend index is based on the prices of 50 well-known stocks.

On ne doit pas confondre les notions de signal, d'empreinte et de signature avec celle d'indicateur.
