Instrument calibration is intended to eliminate or reduce bias in an instrument’s readings over a range for all continuous values. For this purpose, reference standards with known values for selected points covering the range of interest are measured with the instrument in question. Then a functional relationship is established between the values of the standards and the corresponding measurements. 1, record 12, English, - instrument%20calibration

Calibration of instruments.-Calibration can be called for : with a new instrument; when a specified time period is elapsed; when a specified usage(operating hours) has elapsed; when an instrument has had a shock or vibration which potentially may have put it out of calibration; whenever observations appear questionable. In non-specialized use, calibration is often regarded as including the process of adjusting the output or indication on a measurement instrument to agree with value of the applied standard, within a specified accuracy. 3, record 12, English, - instrument%20calibration

... in 1894, the countries of Europe agreed to synchronize their watches(this means that they show the same time), and to use a unified indication of time. Since then, in continental Europe, with a few exceptions, you no longer have to correct your watch when you pass from one country to another; they all use the same time, which is referred to as Central European Time(CET).... During recent years, it has been decided to shift the time during the summer period. Thus, each year from spring(late March) to autumn, time used in Central Europe is the Central European Summer Time(CEST) which is equal to Central European Time plus 1 hour. 2, record 14, English, - Central%20European%20time

The Cup Counter Anemometer gives direct indication of run of wind on a mechanical counter.... Munro Cup Counter Anemometer... is used at many agrometeorological stations in hot climates to indicate the run of wind at 2 m above ground level and for estimating potential evapotranspiration. The three conical cups rotate the spindle at a speed proportional to linear wind speed and the motion is transmitted, via a worm gear, to a six-digit mechanical counter which indicates in mph, knots or km/h. Average run of wind over any chosen period of time can be calculated by noting counter readings at the beginning and end of the cycle. 1, record 15, English, - cup%20counter%20anemometer

The laser(or lidar) velocimeter [lidar=light radar] operates in a fashion entirely analogous to that of the airborne Doppler weather radars likely soon to be available for detecting turbulence in storm cells. As with radars, the device detects air movements by observing the motion of particles suspended in the air and carried with it. The only significant difference is that a beam of coherent infrared radiation is used to scan ahead of the aircraft, instead of a beam(or series of pulses) of radio energy in the considerably longer-wavelength microwave band. The frequency of the back-scattered echoes or reflections undergoes Doppler shift detection by standard heterodyning techniques, which involve comparing the frequency of the reflected illumination with that of the original laser beam. Any reflecting object or material which has motion relative to the transmitter/receiver will cause a detectable shift in frequency, which can be isolated from the transmitter's own proper motion(over the ground) and thus yield a precise indication of the speed at which the air is moving several hundred metres in front of the aircraft. From this data, it is easy to compute what the air speed of the aircraft will be when it reaches that particular patch of air in a few seconds’ time [and hence detect possible turbulence ahead]. 2, record 39, English, - laser%20velocimeter
