An azo dye which appears under the form of yellow crystalline leaflets, is soluble in alcohol, ether, strong mineral acids and oils, is insoluble in water, is derived by the action of benzenediazonium chloride on dimethyl aniline, is toxic by inhalation and by skin absorption, is carcinogenic, was formerly used in coloring butter and oils but may not be used anymore in foods or beverages, and which is used as a chemical indicator, in dyes, and in organic research.

OBS

N-: This prefix must be italicized.

OBS

The prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-," along with their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-" and "p-"), appear in italics and are ignored in alphabetizing. According to the actual chemical nomenclature rules in organic chemistry (in 2003), the numbers designating the positions of the disubstitution groups (1,2- for "ortho-," 1,3- for "meta-" and 1,4- for "para-") are to be preferred to the symbols "o-," "m-" and "p-." Furthermore, the prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-" should not be used anymore, and their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-," and "p-") will soon be judged to be avoided, if not totally condemned.

OBS

DAB; DMAB; P.D.A.B.: These might be in-house or non-recognized abbreviations; not to be used alone, to avoid any risk of confusion.

OBS

N- : Ce préfixe s'écrit en italique.

OBS

The transfer of skin-sensitizing antibodies, now identified as IgE, from an individual to another of the same species. Following intradermal injection of serum, antigen is injected intravenously at the site at which circulating antigen combines with cell-fixed antibody exhibits a wheal and flare reaction. Evans blue dye has been used in animals as an indicator for location and size of the reacting area.

OBS

This dye has been widely used in many staining methods, but its commonest use is probably as a simple red nuclear counterstain. It is an indicator as well as a dye. It changes from red to yellow over the pH range 6. 8-8. 0. It has also been incorporated into bacteriological growth media.

OBS

The names nuclear fast red and kernechtrot are usually applied to another dye, also known as calcium red, CI 60760, which can be used as a red nuclear stain in solution with potassium alum. If a technique calls for nuclear fast red or kernechtrot, it is probably this latter dye to which it refers, not neutral red.

For example, if the pool water is actually pH 5. 0, the colour development will indicate a pH of 6. 8 if phenol red is used, or if the actual pH is 10. 0, the colour development will indicate a pH of 8. 4. This principle applies to any indicator dye.

CONT
