An indicator is an organism with a measurable characteristic(i. e., épaisseur de la coquille, teneurs en polluants, capacité de reproduction) that indicates something about the quality of the environment in which it lives. A monitor is an organism in which the same type of characteristics is repeatedly measured, such as in a series of samples over time. [It does not inform on the quality of the environment].

Le contexte est celui de l'étude de la présence, dans un milieu, d'organochlorés et de métaux lourds à l'aide de l'examen des oiseaux (mouettes et canards) qui vivent dans ce milieu. On assure le suivi écologique à l'aide de ces espèces.

La cliente qui nous a soumis le terme anglais "monitor" au service SVP a pensé à l'équivalent français "organisme baromètre". Nous avons consulté M. Claude Langlois, biologiste de la division d'écotoxicologie du Centre Saint-Laurent, d'Environnement Canada. Selon lui le mot "baromètre" est très bien; il préfère cependant le faire précéder du substantif "espèce".
