INDIFFERENCE CURVE [10 records]

Record 1 2015-03-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Pricing Theory
  • Statistical Graphs and Diagrams
OBS

The common-sense numerical analysis of the way in which a firm will combine inputs to minimize costs can be made more vivid by the use of diagrams. From the production schedule we can draw a picture of the different input combinations that will produce a given output. Figure 27-3 is the exact counterpart of Table 27-2, In it the smooth curve indicates the different combinations of labor and land that yield an output of 346. This could be called a "production-indifference" by analogy with the consumer's indifference curve(...)

English

Subject field(s)
  • Pricing Theory
  • Economic Planning
OBS

As applied to consumers, the quantity of one commodity or service that a given consumer feels he must acquire to compensate him exactly for the loss of one unit of some other commodity or service. When applied to money, the marginal rate of substitution is the price that a given consumer may be willing to pay for a specified quantity of some commodity or service.

OBS

Intermediate texts refer to the slope of the indifference curve at any point as the "substitution ratio" or "the marginal rate of substitution", or the "relative marginal utility ratio" at that point.

Key term(s)
  • substitution ratio
  • relative marginal utility ratio

French

Domaine(s)
  • Théorie des prix
  • Planification économique
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Econometrics
  • Saving and Consumption
CONT

An "indifference curve" or "equal-utility contour" depicts the points of equally desirable consumption. The indifference contour is usually drawn convex from below, in accordance with the empirical law of diminishing relative marginal utilities(or of substitution ratios).

CONT

indifference-curve analysis.

OBS

... the slope of the indifference curve is the measure of the terms on which-for very small changes-the consumer would be willing to exchange a little of his supply of one good in return for a little more of the other.

OBS

For "equal-utility contour" : The food-clothing combinations that yield equal satisfaction can be plotted as a smooth "indifference curve"(or so-called "equal-utility contour").

Key term(s)
  • indifferent curve

French

Domaine(s)
  • Économétrie
  • Épargne et consommation
DEF

OBS

By the arithmetic slope of the indifference curve, we mean this : To find the slope of the curve at, say, point B, take a ruler and place it so that it is just tangent to the curve at B--it touches the curve, but does not cross it either above or below B. Mark the points at which the ruler's edge crosses the two axes. The slope is the ratio of the distance cut off on the vertical axis to the distance cut off on the horizontal axis.
