Ophthalmoscopy can be broken up into two types, direct and indirect. Direct ophthalmoscopy provides an upright, unreversed image of around 15 times magnification, while indirect ophthalmoscopy produces a reversed, inverted image magnified [two to five] times. L'ophtalmoscopie indirecte utilise une source lumineuse dirigée sur l'œil du patient à l'aide d'un miroir mobile; la lumière réfléchie est recueillie par une lentille convergente [...] qui donne une image inversée et virtuelle de la rétine. La taille de l'image varie suivant la puissance de la lentille indirecte; plus la lentille est puissante, plus l'image est petite. Une lentille de +14 dioptries agrandit environ de 2,5 fois la rétine. L'ophtalmoscopie indirecte a l'avantage de permettre un éclairement intense, l'observation d'un large champ en stéréoscopie, et de faire une évaluation dynamique de la pathologie vitréo-rétinienne.
