2, record 1, French, - m%C3%A9tier%20%C3%A0%20ceinture

Dependency, in its most basic sense, refers to a reliance on a particular substance to function normally. This reliance may be driven by a physical need, wherein the body has adapted to the presence of the substance and requires it to avoid withdrawal symptoms. More broadly, it can also involve a psychological element, where the individual feels unable to cope without the substance, leading to a sense of attachment and habituation. 3, record 2, English, - dependence

A standard medical approach, indeed a common lay-person's approach, to thinking about disability involves viewing it as a problem that exists in a person's body. As a consequence, that individual is thought to require treatment or care to fix the disability, to approximate normal functioning, or perhaps as a last measure, to help the individual adapt and learn to function despite the disability. So construed, disability is primarily an individual' s medical problem in need of treatment.... this medical model of disability holds that "a person's functional limitations(impairments) are the root cause of any disadvantages experienced and these disadvantages can therefore only be rectified by treatment or cure. Sideward movement. This rarer form of locomotion is found only in a few North American and African desert snakes. In a general way it is something like walking since the parts of the body behind the head and in front of the tail are used like legs to support the body and are alternately lifted and lowered. While the tracks made by all other snakes are an uninterrupted sliding track, sideward movement produces a discontinuous twin set of tracks like one might find in a two-legged animal. The individual footprints are produced by the parts of the body rubbing against the ground. 1, record 48, English, - sideward%20movement

Rowing Canada Aviron(RCA) is a nonprofit organization recognized by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in Canada. RCA was originally founded as "The Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen" in 1880 by the rowing clubs then in existence-to coordinate and regulate the sport of amateur rowing. In 1974 the name was changed to "The Canadian Amateur Rowing Association-Association Canadienne d’Aviron Amateur", which is still the legally constituted name, although Rowing Canada Aviron is now used as the operating name. RCA's mission is to provide and manage services and programs for the membership within a fully integrated rowing system model, which furnishes opportunities for every individual to reach his or her potential at all levels of participation. 5, record 53, English, - Rowing%20Canada%20Aviron

Many important wildlife habitats are found on private properties, such as cottages, woodlots, ranches and farms. The people who own these lands play an important role in protecting such habitats by limiting certain activities and practices, and encouraging restoration and stewardship. But what happens if they can no longer care for their property, or it passes out of their hands? Since 1995, Environment Canada's Ecological Gifts Program has enabled individual and corporate landowners to protect their cherished piece of nature forever by donating ecologically sensitive land to an environmental charity or government body. An "ecogift" can be a donation of land or a partial interest in land-such as a conservation easement, covenant or servitude. In addition to the peace of mind of knowing that the land will be managed by the recipient according to mutually agreed-upon conservation goals and objectives, donors are also eligible to receive income tax benefits for their donation. 1, record 58, English, - Ecological%20Gifts%20Program

2, record 68, French, - h%C3%A9r%C3%A9dit%C3%A9

Recent media reports have painted a relentlessly gloomy picture of the status of AIDS drug development. Yet much useful information on treatment emerged at the 10th International Conference on AIDS in Yokohama, Japan(August 7-12, 1994). Encouraging treatment developments presented in Yokohama include the following : Recombinant human growth hormone therapy significantly increases weight gain as represented by fat-free lean body mass among people with AIDS-related wasting. AZT treatment dramatically reduces the rate of HIV transmission from mother to infant. Acyclovir co-treatment with anti-HIV therapy significantly increases survival time among people with AIDS. Oral ganciclovir appears to be an effective primary prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus disease. The protease inhibitor drug saquinavir reduces viral load and increases CD4 cell counts significantly more when used in a triple combination with AZT and ddC compared to 2 double combinations(AZT plus ddC or saquinavir plus AZT). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and branched chain DNA(bDNA) testing for measuring HIV load is expected to become a major new tool to help guide individual treatment decisions and to evaluate anti-HIV therapies in clinical studies. 1, record 76, English, - AIDS%20drug

There is wide spread acceptance that for upward social mobility and a better life, an individual must have some college education-preferably a baccalaureate degree("learn more, earn more"). If the proportion of the population attending college expands, a wider variety of people will be included in higher education. For example, people with a wider variety of academic experiences will consider pursuing a college degree. The student body will reflect a broader array of abilities and backgrounds. People will consider college through out adulthood rather than only immediately after the completion of high school. 5, record 77, English, - college%20education

A mixed diet is one in which some of each of a wide variety of foods are eaten in different combinations, every day. Its virtue lies in the fact that an individual who eats that diet over a long time is certain to get everything her body requires under all circumstances. If what is needed is not in one food, it will be in another. If not enough of one nutrient is eaten at breakfast, the deficiency will be made good at lunch. So if your child does eat a good mixed diet, you need not even try to work out how much she needs or is getting of any specific nutrient because day by day and week by week the two will match up... 1, record 85, English, - mixed%20diet

Biological effects of ionizing radiation.... at the upper end of the scale, there is no radiation exposure so high it will guarantee that every exposed individual will suffer the effect. Nor at the lower end is any exposure so low that it will carry no risk to anyone of inducing the effect. These radiation effects are therefore said to have "no threshold. "Logically, it follows that any exposure to radiation, no matter how small, carries some risk and that any reduction in exposure, even from an already very low level, confers some benefit. However, it is not always appreciated that the absence of a "safe" threshold is a theoretical assumption and a safety precaution rather than something that can be proven. It is also not well understood that the toxic effects of radiation, for which there is no defined safe level, may not differ fundamentally from those of some chemical toxins for which a "safe" level in the body or in the environment has been declared. 1, record 96, English, - no%20threshold
Record number: 96, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Complicating the problem of public perceptions of the level of risk associated with radioactive wastes is the confusion induced by two fundamental principles of radio-biological and radiation protection theory. The first is the "no-threshold" hypothesis, and the second is the "as low as reasonably achievable,"or ALARA, principle. The first principle holds that there is no threshold below which exposure to radiation is entirely safe. The "no threshold" hypothesis - that any exposure to ionizing radiation, no matter how small, will increase the probability of a harmful consequence to an exposed individual - is an important scientific concept. ... it is generally agreed that it is wise to err on the side of safety and work from the assumption that there is no safe level. 1, record 96, English, - no%20threshold
