DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Internet and Telematics
CONT

A tenant is essentially a customer who purchases cloud computing resources. This could be an individual user, a group of users, or an entire department or company. Just like a tenant in layman's terms refers to a person or group who rents the use of an apartment or house, a tenant in computing rents the use of a cloud server. Essentially, the user of cloud infrastructure is not the owner, but simply a tenant who pays for access to it.

Record 3 2011-06-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

The study of clouds.

CONT

Throughout [the evolution of cloud seeding with artificial motes] the most important properties appear to be the air motion and the size-distribution spectrum of all the cloud particles, including the condensation nuclei. These properties vary significantly with time and position within the cloud, so that cloud studies demand the intensive examination of individual clouds with expensive facilities such as aircraft and radar.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
CONT

In theory, however, at deep sites the material may eventually enter a phase of passive sedimentation where cloud velocity is essentially a function of the intrinsic fall velocity of the individual particles of which the material is composed.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
CONT

Cloud movement. Displacement of clouds, or movement within individual clouds, observed from the surface, an aircraft, a satellite, etc.

OBS

Strictly speaking, these three terms are not perfect synonyms. Generally speaking however, they are often used interchangeably.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
CONT

CONT

The planets of our Solar System formed due to two properties of interstellar clouds : rotation and turbulence. When clouds fragment during contraction, individual fragments turn this way and that, each having inherited the angular momentum(spin) of one or a few discrete whorls or eddies in the original clouds. Each cloud fragment(a potential star) would have rotated faster and faster as it contracted, owing to the physical necessity of conserving its angular momentum-much as a skater spins up when he/she folds in her/his arms. Fragments with low angular momentum form the core and fragments with high angular momentum populate a flattened disk orbiting the core, with a shape similar to many galaxies. Often the core itself is fragmented, leading to binary and multiple star systems.

Subject field(s)
  • Physics
  • Atmospheric Physics
  • Meteorology
DEF

Study of the processes which lead to the formation of individual cloud and precipitation particles.

OBS

It is customary to divide the study of atmospheric clouds into two parts. The first, the micro-physics, deals with the cloud particles. It is concerned with the physical processes attending their formation, aggregation, and evaporation, and with their individual structure and properties. The second part, the macro-physics, is the study of the air movements which govern the formation, growth, and evaporation of a cloud as a whole.
