Triggered conformational changes... are the motions of groups of atoms(i. e. individual side-chains) or whole sections of a protein(i. e. loops of chain, domains of secondary and tertiary structure, or subunit), which occur as a response to a specific stimulus. The distance moved can be as much as 10 [angstrom unit] or more. The time scale can be estimated by studies of the rate of binding or turnover reactions. The energy for triggered conformational change comes from specific interactions, such as electrostatic attractions or hydrogen bonding interactions. The best-known example of a triggered conformational change is the transition in tertiary structure that occurs when ligands bind to the iron atoms of hemoglobin.

OBS

The types of substances whose binding can trigger a specific conformational change include substrates (dihydroxyacetone phosphate in triose phosphate isomerase), coenzymes (NAD binding to lactate dehydrogenase), allosteric effectors (CTP and ATP in aspartic transcarbamylase), inhibitors (statine-containing polypeptide inhibitors of acid proteases) and even protons (the Bohr effect in hemoglobin; pH-dependent conformational changes in adenylate kinase).

On the 1994 shuttle radar flights, 3-D images were created by flying on a near-repeating orbit, imaging targets twice from different perspectives. With single-pass interferometry, two antennas fly in "formation, "collecting two sets of data simultaneously. SRTM's mast permits simultaneous measurements separated by a fixed distance.

The usual description of the scattering of radiation is based on the assumption of scattering by individual particles. However, this concept breaks down if the medium becomes ’continuous’, that is if the distance between the scattering particles becomes less than the wavelength of the radiation(analogous to the specular reflection from a surface). The usual effects of scattering(i. e. spatial redistribution of radiation) disappear in this case as the scattering phase function becomes sharply peaked into the forward direction. Density gradients of the medium will then result in a quasi-refraction effect(the refraction of light in the earth's atmosphere is likely to be of this type).

CONT

In a long synthetic aperture (array), SAR focusing involves the removal and compensation of path length differences from the antenna to the target on the ground.

CONT

The main advantage of a focused synthetic aperture is that it increases its array length over those radar signals that can be processed, and thus increases potential SAR resolution at any range. SAR focusing is a necessary process when the length of a synthetic array is a significant fraction of the range to ground being imaged, as the lines-of-sight(range) from a particular point on the ground to each individual element of the array differ in distance. These range differences, or path length differences, of the radar signals can affect image quality. In a focused SAR image these phase errors can be compensated for by applying a phase correction to the return signal at each synthetic aperture element. Focusing errors may be introduced by unknown or uncorrected platform motion. In an unfocused SAR image, the usable synthetic aperture length is quite limited.

... attaching commercial sockets of forged steel to wire rope ends... The wire rope is seized at the end and another seizing is applied at a distance from the end equal to the length of the basket of the socket... For large ropes, the seizing should be several inches long. The end seizing is now removed and the strands are separated so that the fiber core can be cut back to the next siezing. The individual wires are then untwisted and "broomed out" and for the distance they are to be inserted in the socket are carefully cleaned with benzine, naphtha, or unleaded gasoline.

CONT

There are three types of zinced endings: A cone is formed from molten zinc poured into a mold in which a frayed rope end has been inserted; sometimes a ferrule is used as mold and stays on after pouring the zinc; or sockets are used instead of the ferrule. An open socket has ears to hold a pin and cotter. A closed socket has a loop or "bail." Both are heavy forgings and find widespread use. All three zinced on endings need a good deal of preparation. The rope’s end must be broomed out, cleaned with acid and straightened. Special endings: such as thimbles, clips, and clamps are quicker and easier to apply than a zinc socket, but efficiency is not as high as with other attachments.

DEF

The unconscious defence mechanism of indifference and detachment.

CONT

The boy who has been rejected by girl after girl may become aloof and detached: "Who needs people?" ... Many victims of chronic unemployment become so apathetic and beaten that they cannot apply for a new job or job training for fear of disappointment ... Emotional insulation can ... take pathological forms. In cases of chronic depression the patient may detach himself so completely that he loses the power to react even to fortunate events. In schizophrenia, apathy may become so complete that the patient withdraws into a stuporous state.

CONT

The patient kept distant from others so he would not experience more emotional pain or disappointment. This wall is often referred to as emotional insulation.

OBS

insulation : the action of placing in a detached situation or the state of already being placed in a detached situation. It could also mean the material used in placing one in a detached situation. Figuratively speaking, this could include a "wall", "barrier" or simply "distance". "Isolation" is either the action whereby an individual withdraws himself socially from society or the condition of already being in this state(=solitude). Other related terms : isolation, withdrawal, emotional indifference, emotional blocking, emotional withdrawal.

OBS

OBS

D'autres termes connexes : indifférence affective, blocage affectif, solitude-introspection.
