Self-initiation consists of owning one's performance, owning one's learning and owning one's career. The individual has tools at their disposal to assess their learning requirements and the resources to undertake the learning they need. An individual has to own their performance and the consequences of this performance, in order to have a sense of ownership for the learning they need to undertake in order to have the capability required to perform at the right level.

"Just for me" learning. A new model using "learning objects" is gaining momentum. Learning objects are self-contained learning components(a course module, video or audio clips, for example) that are stored and accessed independently. Learning objects can be re-assembled to create new courses or sequenced to form individual learning paths. This has clear benefits. It enables mass-customisation of learning with more personalised and "just for me" content. And for authors there is the opportunity to search for existing learning objects from within the organisation or from external providers and reuse them, saving time and money.

Similarly, "just-enough" training means that the employee can find the answer to a question without having to go through a long training program that contains much more information than they need.

La formation juste à temps est un phénomène relativement récent qui a émergé avec l'arrivée des réseaux de distribution et de partage de l'information, des systèmes intégrés de soutien à la tâche, de même qu'avec l'arrivée des intranets. La possibilité que nous offre ces outils d'accéder en temps réel et à la vitesse de l'éclair à une quantité phénoménale d'information (certains sites contiennent des millions de pages d'information) a permis le développement de ce concept de formation juste à temps. En effet, qu'y a-t-il de plus théoriquement intéressant que de voir nos employés rechercher, trouver, analyser et utiliser l'information ou, encore mieux, la connaissance au moment même où ils en ont besoin, sans devoir aller suivre un cours qui a pris beaucoup de temps à développer et qui plus est, n'est offert que quelques fois par année au moment où il y a suffisamment de personnes qui ont besoin de cette formation.
