[A] cornet was originally the third and lowest grade of commissioned officer in a British cavalry troop, after captain and lieutenant. A cornet is a new and junior officer.... The cornet carried the troop standard, also known as a "cornet. "The rank of cornet was the equivalent of the infantry rank of ensign, and was one of the subaltern ranks(along with lieutenant).

Le grade militaire de cornette désignait, dans la cavalerie française de l'ancien Régime, l'officier le moins gradé de chaque compagnie. En France, le terme de cornette, correspondant à l'actuel sous-lieutenant, était l'équivalent de celui d'enseigne dans l'infanterie (officier porte-drapeau). Son rôle dans la bataille était de tenir l'étendard de la compagnie. D'ailleurs à l'origine le terme «cornette» désignait l'étendard lui-même. Le grade fut créé à la fin du XVIIe siècle dans les régiments «colonel général» et «mestre de camp général» avant d'être généralisé en 1756 et 1757. Dans les compagnies de dragons, on utilisait parfois le terme «guidon» pour désigner le cornette.
