CONT

The ordered structures of macromolecules in their natural state often makes them largely inaccessible to enzymes for which in other forms they are their substrates... It is relevant therefore also to focus attention on... pretreatment employed... to render such ordered structures accessible. Accessibility to enzymes should... be correlated with accessibility to chemical catalysts such as acids... Pretreatment of cellulose fibres with aqueous saturated solutions of lithium chloride or lithium iodide for 24 hours at ambient temperature caused a marked increase in the initial rate of hydrolysis of the washed pretreated cellulose by cellulase operating at 50 °C over 60 minutes.

DEF

The CSA [comparative safety assessment] is basically a two-tiered approach. The initial step comprises a thorough comparison with the closely related conventional counterpart to identify any differences that may have safety implications for the consumer. This comparison includes both phenotypic characteristics as well as a compositional analysis. The phenotypic analysis should also include comparative health parameters. The compositional analysis will focus on key substances in the animal products under scrutiny and will be subject to changes according to the latest scientific state of the art. The second step of the CSA comprises the toxicological and nutritional evaluation of the identified differences between the GM [genetically modified] animal and its conventional counterpart. As a result of this second step, additional testing may be required and can result in an iterative process in order to obtain all relevant information for the final risk characterization.

The Children's Oral Health Initiative(COHI) was developed as a means to address the disparity between the oral health of First Nations and Inuit and that of the general Canadian population. COHI was launched on a test basis in Fall 2004. COHI focuses on the prevention of dental disease and promotion of good oral health practices. The goal of COHI is to shift the emphasis from a primarily treatment based approach to a more balanced prevention and treatment focus. The initial focus for oral health promotion will be directed at three target groups : pregnant women and primary caregivers; pre-school children, 0-4 years of age; and school children, 5-7 years of age. Health Canada expects that the COHI, once fully implemented in subsequent years, will result in significant improvement of the oral health in First Nations and Inuit.
