CONT

The Rack Level Test Facility is the formal verification tool used for the functional and operational testing of internal payloads. The Rack Level Test Facility will however, be modified to also allow the verification of external payloads and centre-aisle payloads, but this capability does not currently exist. This verification is carried out before installation into the Columbus Laboratory(for the initial internal payload complement), or prior to shipment to the Kennedy Space Centre for installation into the Multi Purpose Logistics Module, for transportation to the ISS.

CONT

The main propulsion system, assisted by the two solid rocket boosters during the initial phases of the ascent trajectory, provides the velocity increment from lift-off to a predetermined velocity increment before orbit insertion.... The magnitude of the velocity increment supplied by the OMS [Orbital Maneuvering System] depends on payload weight, mission trajectory and system limitations.

CONT

Vacuum Exhaust System(Waste Gas). All of the laboratory modules contain the plumbing to support a waste gas exhaust system that is vented to space. A 2. 5 cm(1 in.) diameter gas line connected to this exhaust system is provided at each of the ISPR [International Standard Payload Racks] locations. The pressure allowed into the waste gas line is 275. 8 kPa(40 psia). The temperature of the exhaust waste gas is allowed to be be between 15. 6-45°C(60-113°F). The waste gas system can reach pressures of 1 x 10 [minus³] torr(1. 9 x 10minus 5 psia) in less than two hours for a single payload volume of 100 liters(3. 5 ft³) at an initial pressure of 101. 4 kPa(14. 7 psia). The waste gas system is a shared and scheduled resource that can only be operated at one ISPR location within each module at a time. This requirement is to prevent cross contamination of payloads and incompatible mixtures of waste gas constituents. The types of waste gas constituents allowed must be compatible with the wetted materials of the module waste gas system.

DEF

first stage canopy : Usually, a small canopy which is deployed to provide initial stabilization of the payload and/or to decelerate the payload to a velocity or dynamic pressure where the intermediate or final stage canopy can be deployed. Often called a "drogue parachute".

CONT

drogue assembly: The main parachute canopy is extracted by a drogue parachute. The drogue parachute may be simplex or multiplex. The smaller drogue parachutes are called controller drogues; the largest is the main drogue.

OBS

chute: According to source DEMAV, it is a slang term for "parachute". According to source OXENG, it is a colloquial abbreviation.

OBS

See also "pilot parachute".
