Tandem mass spectrometry... is a process by which gas-phase ions of an analyte resulting from an initial ionization undergo separation according to their m/z [mass-to-charge ratio] values, using a first iteration of mass spectrometry. Ions of individual m/z values(precursor ions) are then subjected to collisional activation so that these precursor ions will fragment, producing product ions of different m/z values. These product ions then are separated and detected by a second iteration of mass spectrometry; thus the name tandem mass spectrometry or MS/MS. 3, record 4, English, - tandem%20mass%20spectrometry

Androgen-binding protein(ABP) is synthesized by the Sertoli cell in the testis, where ~80% is secreted into the luminal fluid and the other ~20% is secreted into the interstitial compartment and taken up into the systemic circulation. ABP binds testosterone and transports it in the seminiferous tubule fluid to the epididymis, where it is taken up by a receptor-mediated process into the principal cells of the initial segment and caput epididymis. Once released from ABP, the testosterone is converted to [dihydrotestosterone](DHT) by the epithelial 5α-reductase. ABP is very similar in structure to sex hormone binding globulin(SHBG), which is synthesized in the liver and binds testosterone in the peripheral blood. ABP has been identified in rat, dog, monkey, and human. 1, record 17, English, - androgen%2Dbinding%20protein

The CSA [comparative safety assessment] is basically a two-tiered approach. The initial step comprises a thorough comparison with the closely related conventional counterpart to identify any differences that may have safety implications for the consumer. This comparison includes both phenotypic characteristics as well as a compositional analysis. The phenotypic analysis should also include comparative health parameters. The compositional analysis will focus on key substances in the animal products under scrutiny and will be subject to changes according to the latest scientific state of the art. The second step of the CSA comprises the toxicological and nutritional evaluation of the identified differences between the GM [genetically modified] animal and its conventional counterpart. As a result of this second step, additional testing may be required and can result in an iterative process in order to obtain all relevant information for the final risk characterization. 2, record 20, English, - compositional%20analysis

This technological innovation, known as automated journalism, is a relatively new phenomenon in the area of computational journalism. Automated journalism refers to the process of using software or algorithms to automatically generate news stories without human intervention—after the initial programming of the algorithm, of course. Thus, once the algorithm is developed, it allows for automating each step of the news production process, from the collection and analysis of data, to the actual creation and publication of news. Automated journalism—also referred to as algorithmic or, somewhat misleadingly, robot journalism—works for fact-based stories for which clean, structured, and reliable data are available. 8, record 22, English, - automated%20journalism

Photosynthesis is the chemical process where plants and some bacteria can capture and organically fix the energy of the sun.... The main product of photosynthesis is a carbohydrate, such as the sugar glucose, and oxygen which is released to the atmosphere. All of the sugar produced in the photosynthetic cells of plants and other organisms is derived from the initial chemical combining of carbon dioxide and water with sunlight. This chemical reaction is catalyzed by chlorophyll acting in concert with other pigment, lipid, sugars, protein, and nucleic acid molecules. Sugars created in photosynthesis can be later converted by the plant to starch for storage, or it can be combined with other sugar molecules to form specialized carbohydrates such as cellulose, or it can be combined with other nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur, to build complex molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. 3, record 30, English, - photosynthesis

A stalking horse bid is an initial proposal to buy an asset from a distressed company(most often one that is bankrupt or in bankruptcy protection). Usually, the company or its receiver will select a buyer willing to make an offer. The idea is to establish a minimum price for the asset, by getting a first bid out in the open. This keeps lowball offers off the table and sets up a competitive bidding process. The stalking horse bidder usually gets a break fee if it doesn’t end up as the eventual winner. 2, record 41, English, - stalking%2Dhorse%20bid

The half cooling time measures the time that is taken to remove 50% of the heat from the apple. A half cooling time of 8 hours means that it will take that time to reduce fruit temperatures by half this amount, i.e., 20°F, to reach a temperature of 52°F, and a further 8 hours to reduce fruit temperatures by 10°F to 42°F. Any resulting trial structure consisting of initial coordinates for some of the atoms is often sufficient for location of the other atoms by the application of the method of successive Fourier electron-density maps. The phases calculated from the initial parameters of the presumably known atoms, together with the observed Fhkl, are utilized to compute a density map. New coordinates are obtained not only for the peaks corresponding to these known atoms but also for the other peaks which it is hoped can be interpreted from stereochemical considerations as being due to additional atoms in the structure. The Fourier process is then reiterated, with the new phases calculated from the modified coordinates of the previous set of atoms plus the coordinates of newly located atoms. If a correct distinction between the "true" and the "false" peaks is made, the electron-density function usually converges to give the entire crystal structure. 1, record 51, English, - Fourier%20electron%2Ddensity%20map

Les procédés continus ont généralement une capacité de production supérieure pour une installation de taille donnée. [...] Autre avantage : elles minimisent les pertes en catalyseur. A certain class of ceramic and metallic materials can be manufactured by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method. Even though by now this process has included reaction systems of the solid-gas and solid-liquid types, the original work was directed towards the reactions investigated where not only the reactants but also the final products formed in the solid phase. Condensed phase combustion is a complex phenomenon of theoretical and practical interest, in particular, as a method to synthesize materials. This combustion synthesis process involves a self-sustained combustion wave which propagates through initial reactants converting them into a desired product. In condensed phase combustion the initial reactants as well as final, and possibly intermediate products, remain in the condensed phase throughout the reaction. Though the combustion process occurs in a heterogeneous medium composed of reactive particles, typical models of condensed phase combustion treat the medium as homogeneous. 4, record 71, English, - condensed%2Dphase%20combustion

This thesis presents a new approach for the initialization process(initial alignment and calibration) of strapdown Inertial Navigation Systems for air launched tactical missiles operating in an unaided inertial navigation mode... The initialization is treated as a training of Artificial Neural Network filter. A new methodology is developed which can handle, misalignment of Inertial Navigation System and scale factor, as well as bias errors of the measurement instruments used in Inertial Navigation System... It is shown that the optimization algorithm employed as well as Artificial Neural Network is quite suitable for Inertial Navigation System initialization. Prelaunch aircraft maneuvers measured by the Inertial Navigation System of the aircraft provide the necessary training data for the Neural Network for the missile navigation system that initializes the missile's inertial navigation system. 1, record 80, English, - inertial%20navigation%20system%20initialization

The lasing phenomenon is made possible by a process called the stimulated emission of radiation. This occurs when a photon interacts with an excited atom, causing it to drop down to a lower energy level. The photon given off by the atom then has the same phase, direction, and polarization as the initial photon. By repeating this process many times, one can produce a highly coherent beam of light. 3, record 82, English, - lasing%20phenomenon

Besides the germination points for buds, the main body of the Mandelbrot set has still other kinds of boundary points... Unlike in the parabolic case, the boundary does not extend to the fixed point, but the dynamics of the process does not reach it either. The circles shown around the fixed point are invariant circles, i. e. if one takes an initial point on one of the circles, all iterated points will also be on it. Inside the region bounded by the Julia set, the process runs in the following way : first the point springs from smaller, peripheral buds into larger ones until it comes into the disk containing the fixed point. This disk is called a Siegel disk after the German mathematician Carl Ludwig Siegel. When a point has arrived there, it simply rotates around the fixed point on its invariant circle. 2, record 99, English, - Siegel%20disk
