[Avalanche Victim Search. ] The initial search involves a fast scan of the entire area where victims might be found(that is, from the last seen point, within the perimeters of the avalanche, and in the deposition areas). It concentrates on likely areas of burial in addition to listening for transceiver signals and looking for clues on the surface. Initial searchers should be equipped with transceivers, probe, and shovel as well as a few wands if available. Do a visual search for clues on the surface(that is, hand, foot, clothing, and equipment). Call out occasionally and listen for responses from victims. Pull any items found out on the snow to see if a victim is attached. Mark the location of found items and bring them to the attention of the rescue leader. Listen carefully for transceiver signals in these locations.(If victims were not wearing transceivers or if is unknown whether transceivers were used, quickly probe the area around found items.) N. Chomsky describes his pursuit in theoretical terms as a search for universal grammar(or U. G.) U. G. is genetically determined at its initial state(in the organism) and is specified, sharpened, articulated, and refines under conditions set by experience, to yield the particular grammars found in specific groups of individuals(1980, p. 234). A theory of universal grammar is said to be an explanatory theory. To know a language is to be in a certain state of mind/brain : this state is described by a core grammar which consists of certain principles of universal grammar, which are to be discovered by linguists. Thus, Chomsky takes a purely realistic stance : language knowledge is a series of states in the brain... Now he has come to the conclusion that it is more productive to speak of various principles that govern language use. These principles begin in human biology. They determine the kinds of grammar that are available in principle(Chomsky 1979). The principles of U. G. are various subsystems, which go by names like binding theory, control theory, government, theta theory, and the like-each of which features a limited degree of parametric variation. 2, record 21, English, - universal%20grammar

To make the search computationally tractable, DEBUGGY assumes that the simple bugs that interact to form multiple ones can also be detected individually. This means that there exists at least one problem in which either the simple bugs appear in isolation or the complex bug is consistent with their individual manifestations. On this assumption, the generate-and-test method is first used to construct an initial hypothesis space. Every primitive bug is tested, plus a few very common combinations, and only those for which there is evidence in the data are kept. The initial hypothesis space is further reduced by eliminations of certain overlaps in coverage, with preference for multiple over single evidence. Next, the bugs in this initial hypothesis space are combined, and every combination that explains more than its parts is retained in the set of hypotheses. 1, record 25, English, - initial%20hypothesis%20space

Compared to depth-first minimax, the pruning possible with this process can reduce the number of computations by several orders of magnitude. One advantage is that if one finds the best path in the initial branch generation and evaluation, it is not necessary to generate and evaluate the reminder of the tree. 1, record 26, English, - backward%20pruning%20procedure

A search technique which combines the best characteristics of all random search techniques, yet is faster, and is especially suited for multimodal as well as unimodal search. An initial guess is required to start the search. However, if a random trial is closer to the maximum/minimum, another step in the same direction is taken, and if this is a better point, another step in the same direction is selected until no further improvement occurs. Then the process moves back to the last point to cause improvement and commences a random search again. 1, record 27, English, - accelerated%20random%20search

A modification of the random search which uses a nonuniform distribution from which the sample points are selected as the search continues. The initial point is chosen by making a guess, and a nonuniform probability density function is centered on this guess. The consequent samples are then chosen from this distribution, and a cluster of measurements is created. The best of this initial set of samples is then used as the center of a new set of measurements where the same kind of distribution but with a small variance is used to generate a cluster of points. This process is repeated until the search specifications are satisfied. Thus, the search "creeps" toward the maximum(or minimum). 1, record 28, English, - creeping%20random%20search%20procedure
