The machines considered thus far are fixed and deterministic in that their responses to a particular input from a given initial state are always the same. Also, the input sequences that we have been applying to these machines have always had a particular representation associated with them....... the output is determined by the program and set of data applied, where the same program and the same data always give the same output. A stochastic automation or probabilistic machine on the other hand, has an output that is not necessarily the same for every application of the input. 1, record 2, English, - stochastic%20automation

3, record 6, French, - pr%C3%A9traitement

The CSA [comparative safety assessment] is basically a two-tiered approach. The initial step comprises a thorough comparison with the closely related conventional counterpart to identify any differences that may have safety implications for the consumer. This comparison includes both phenotypic characteristics as well as a compositional analysis. The phenotypic analysis should also include comparative health parameters. The compositional analysis will focus on key substances in the animal products under scrutiny and will be subject to changes according to the latest scientific state of the art. The second step of the CSA comprises the toxicological and nutritional evaluation of the identified differences between the GM [genetically modified] animal and its conventional counterpart. As a result of this second step, additional testing may be required and can result in an iterative process in order to obtain all relevant information for the final risk characterization. 2, record 9, English, - compositional%20analysis

Predicting surface settlements is one of the key tasks for engineers in building urban tunnels. This work analyzes the set of information gathered during the boring phase for the northern tunnel of the "Toulon underground crossing".... The article then focuses on : the northern tunnel site of the Toulon underground crossing, the two real-time prediction methods used to control tunnel construction from 1998 to 2000, and the conclusions drawn from the surface settlement analysis along the tunnel. The first set of conclusions from this study highlight the importance of the initial geomechanical state of the ground, which has been inherited from the tectonic history of the site. The tunnel crossing of the site has revealed these differences in initial state, which assume the form of a sequence of alternatively contracted and dilated zones, thereby producing uneven surface settlements. 2, record 37, English, - underground%20crossing

Many problems can be represented as an initial state, a goal state and a set of operators that define operations to go to new states from a given state. The states that can be reached from the initial state by applying the rules in all possible ways define the state space. The problem is then to reach the goal state from the initial state. By this formulation almost any problem can be reduced to a search problem. 3, record 45, English, - state%20space

N. Chomsky describes his pursuit in theoretical terms as a search for universal grammar(or U. G.) U. G. is genetically determined at its initial state(in the organism) and is specified, sharpened, articulated, and refines under conditions set by experience, to yield the particular grammars found in specific groups of individuals(1980, p. 234). A theory of universal grammar is said to be an explanatory theory. To know a language is to be in a certain state of mind/brain : this state is described by a core grammar which consists of certain principles of universal grammar, which are to be discovered by linguists. Thus, Chomsky takes a purely realistic stance : language knowledge is a series of states in the brain... Now he has come to the conclusion that it is more productive to speak of various principles that govern language use. These principles begin in human biology. They determine the kinds of grammar that are available in principle(Chomsky 1979). The principles of U. G. are various subsystems, which go by names like binding theory, control theory, government, theta theory, and the like-each of which features a limited degree of parametric variation. 2, record 46, English, - universal%20grammar

Formal Security Policy Model. A mathematically precise statement of a security policy. To be adequately precise, such a model must represent the initial state of a system, the way in which the system progresses from one state to another, and a definition of a "secure" state of the system. To be acceptable as a basis for a TCB, the model must be supported by a formal proof that if the initial state of the system satisfies the definition of a "secure" state and if all assumptions required by the model hold, then all future states of the system will be secure. Some formal modeling techniques include :state transition models, temporal logic models, denotational semantics models, algebraic specification models. An example is the model described by Bell and LaPadula.... 1, record 50, English, - security%20policy%20model

2, record 54, French, - r%C3%A9currence%20de%20Poincar%C3%A9

The overall picture formed by all possible initial conditions in the(x, x) plane is referred to as the phase portrait. Consider the motion of a pendulum which comes to rest due to air resistance. In the abstract two-dimensional phase space(with coordinates x, and velocity, x) motions appear as noncrossing spirals converging asymptotically towards the resting, fixed state. This focus is called a point attractor which attracts all local transient motions. 2, record 55, English, - phase%20portrait
