The Zarya control module, also known by the technical term Functional Cargo Block and the Russian acronym FGB, was the first component launched for the International Space Station and provides the station's initial propulsion and power.... The U. S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means Sunrise when translated to English, is a U. S. component of the station although it was built and launched by Russia.... The Zarya module is 41. 2 feet long and 13. 5 feet wide at its widest point. It has an operational lifetime of at least 15 years. Its solar arrays and six nickel-cadmium batteries can provide an average of 3 kilowatts of electrical power. Using the Russian Kurs system, the Zarya will perform an automated and remotely piloted rendezvous and docking with the Service Module in orbit. Its docking power will accommodate Russian Soyuz piloted spacecraft and unpiloted Progress resupply spacecraft. Each of the two solar arrays is 35 feet long and 11 feet wide. The module's 16 fuel tanks combined can hold more than 6 tons of propellant. The attitude control system for the module includes 24 large steering jets and 12 small steering jets. Two large engines are available for reboosting the spacecraft and making major orbital changes.

The Zarya module now provides orientation control, communications and electrical power attached to the passive Unity module while the station awaits launch of the third component, a Russian-provided crew living quarters and early station core known as the Service Module ... The Service Module will enhance or replace many functions of the Zarya. Later in the station’s assembly sequence, the Zarya module will be used primarily for its storage capacity and external fuel tanks.

Earth observation satellites are used to observe the earth surfaces, sea surfaces, ocean currents, clouds, etc., from space. Observation instruments are installed on satellites for remote sensing purposes. There is a relatively short development time for a long duration mission. Once launched, it has the advantage of being able to observe wide areas. Instrument operations can be easily performed from the console of a ground control station. Issues with satellite-based remote sensing are as follows : a lengthy development time from planning to actual operations, significant initial investments, risk of launch failure and inability to repair the satellite up in space.

Équipés de systèmes de vision de plus en plus performants, les satellites d'observation sont capables de couvrir de manière systématique et répétitive des portions de territoires immenses et produisent des images pourtant très détaillées. Ainsi le satellite français «SPOT», qui représente la référence en matière de télédétection civile permet de découvrir des objets d'une dizaine de mètres sur chacune des images de 60 km de côté qu'il prend à l'altitude de 830 km à laquelle il orbite. Ses capacités de visée oblique autorisent à la fois la prise de vues stéréoscopiques qui restituent le relief du terrain, et l'observation répétée d'une même région sans attendre d'en repasser à la verticale. Recul, détail, répétitivité et souplesse d'emploi par une programmation au jour le jour : autant d'atouts qui font du satellite un outil proche des besoins des clients utilisateurs, organismes nationaux ou internationaux comme simples particuliers.

PMA-2[, ] the second unit was temporarily attached to Unity before launch and provides the initial docking interface for Shuttle missions with ISS [International Space Station]. One end is attached to Unity by a Passive Common Berthing Mechanism, while the other end uses an Androgynous Peripheral Attach System to connect with the Shuttle external airlock and docking system. This unit has a hatch and an 8-inch view port. Attached to the exterior of PMA-2 are MDM [Multiplexer/Demultiplexer] computers, providing early command and control of the Unity node. This allows the Shuttle crew to control the Shuttle-end PMA-2 docking mechanism from the orbiter's aft flight deck. PMA-2 is planned for relocation on a later ISS assembly mission, and further details on activities relating to this unit will be updated when this occurs.
