INJECTION BLOW MOLD [9 records]

Record 1 2011-08-02

English

Subject field(s)

DEF

A machine used for the process of blow molding.

OBS

Blow molding consists in forming bottles or packages from plastic by expanding a blank in a hollow mold. The blank is usually a tube, formed on the machine that performs the blow molding. The parison is extruded through extrusion blow molding, or injected through injection blow molding, with the use of granular resin as raw material.

CONT

CONT

The extrusion blow-molding process requires the resin to have a capability known as "melt strength. "The extruded parison must always hang in the air by its own strength until the mold can capture it for blow molding. Resins that have a relatively "sharp" melting point or that do not have melt strength, as is the case with many injection grades, are difficult to blow mold.

CONT

Melt strength (MS) is the measurement of a product’s parison flow during extrusion.

CONT

DEF

In moulding, a metal pin located in one half of a mould which enters a corresponding hole in the other half so that, upon closure of the mould, the two parts become correctly aligned.

CONT

Unlike injection blow molds that are mounted onto a die set, all extrusion blow molds are fitted with hardened steel guide pins and bushings. These guide pins ensure the two mold halves are perfectly matched.

CONT

Leader pins or guide pins should be provided on all molds. At a minimum, the diameter should be 2% of the mold width plus length.

Engineers from G.W. Plastics Inc., Gethel, Vt., and Lexmark International, Lexington, Ky., Carilon aliphatic polyketone for gears in laser-printer tone cartridges.

CONT

Several original polymer families are to be launched at NPE. Perhaps the most impelling is aliphatic polyketone from Shell Chemical Co. [Stand S1323]. The products(tradename Carilon) are said to mold well, exhibiting superior mechanical and temperature-resistance performances and excellent part surface properties. They require no pre-drying. Material is viable in injection, blow and rotomolding, and pipe, sheet, and profile extrusion.

[...] Premiers secteurs d'application visés : l'automobile, l'électrotechnique et l'électroménager.

Another process somewhat related to extrusion blow molding is the extrusion/molded neck process. Still used today by Owens-Illinois, this is a proprietary process that traces its roots to glass-blowing technology. It is unique in that the bottle neck finish is injection molded and the bottle body is extrusion blow-molded. In this process, the two halves of a neck finish cavity or neckring are mounted to an actuating head assembly, which intermeshes with the two halves of the blow-mold cavity. The process cycle begins with the main body mold cavity open and the neckring cavity closed. The actuating head assembly moves downward to contact the extrusion die head. When it is in position, extrusion pressure fills the neck section with plastic melt. After it is held for one to two seconds, the head assembly moves upward while, simultaneously, the parison is extruded. When the head assembly reaches the top of its stroke, the blow-mold cavity closes on the parison. The remaining steps of parison pinch-off, blowing, and part removal all follow conventional techniques. Although the production cycle is somewhat slow, the process offers the quality advantage of an accurately molded neck and the process advantage of a parison held at both ends.
