Subject field(s)
  • Plastics Manufacturing
DEF

The technique used to partially clear the resin from the injection nozzle after the injection cycle. By pulling the screw rearward, the resin is drawn back into the injector.

CONT

Most machines retract the screw slightly at this point to decompress the material to prevent drooling out of the nozzle. This is called the suck back and is usually controlled by a timer.

OBS

When the pressure on the sprue is not held long enough for the resin to cool before the screw returns, some of the hot resin in the cavities or runner system may expand back into the nozzle and cause sink marks on the finished part.

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Production
DEF

A method of producing heavy viscous hydrocarbons [in which] steam is injected into the reservoir, where it heats the hydrocarbons, making them less viscous and able to flow into the wellbore.

DEF

An enhanced oil recovery technique in which steam is pumped into a production well and left for a week or two to soften the oil.

OBS

[In the cyclic steam injection] steam is not injected continuously but rather in cycles.

OBS

... recovery by steam stimulation is usually less than recovery by steam injection. For this reason, some operators first apply steam stimulation and then convert to steam injection following the first or second cycle.

OBS

Generally a steam soak period of perhaps 30 days is initiated, followed by a brief shut-in period, after which the well is produced for several months.

OBS

huff-and-puff injection: a colloquial term for cyclic steam injection.

Domaine(s)

DEF

Méthode de récupération thermique.

CONT

L'injection cyclique («huff and puff» ou «steam soak»).

OBS

Le volume 6 de la série IFP-14 est paru en 1975.

Subject field(s)
  • Research and Development (Petroleum Tech.)
CONT

In partnership with the Alberta Oilsands Technical Authority(AOSTRA) in 1979 the pressure cycle steam drive system was developed. This process takes advantage of a basal water zone, which underlies the oil sands in this area, to heat the oil sands deposit from below. Once a hot communication path is established between wells, continuous steam injection is begun, with the injection and production rates controlled to alternately pressure up and blow down the reservoir.

CONT

What makes automatic molding automatic is the mold. There are a number of requirements for automatic molding. The machine must be capable of consistent, repetitive action. The mold must clear itself automatically. This means that all the parts have to be ejected using a runnerless mold, or that the runner and the parts have to be ejected in a conventional mold. There may be some method for assisting in the removal of the pieces, usually in the form of a wiper mechanism, air blast, or robot. All machines used automatically must have a low-pressure closing system to prevent the machine from closing under full pressure if there is any obstruction between the dies. The machine shuts itself off and/or an alarm is sounded. Automatic molding does not necessarily eliminate the operator. Many times, an operator is present to pack the parts and perform secondary operations. Automatic molding gives a better quality piece and more rapid cycle. In automatic molding an experienced person usually attends several machines. Unless the powder feed and part removal are automated, this person takes care of those operations.

Reciprocating screw systems. In a reciprocating(in-line) screw, the material is fed from the hopper, plasticized in the screw, and forced past a one-way valve at the injection end of the screw. The material accumulates in front of the screw, forcing back the screw, its drive and motor, and the pistons of the two hydraulic injection cylinders.... When the screw reaches a certain position, it contacts a limit switch that stops the rotation. When the cycle is ready to inject, two hydraulic injection cylinders, one on each side of the carriage, move the screw assembly forward and use the screw as an injection ram.

Another process somewhat related to extrusion blow molding is the extrusion/molded neck process. Still used today by Owens-Illinois, this is a proprietary process that traces its roots to glass-blowing technology. It is unique in that the bottle neck finish is injection molded and the bottle body is extrusion blow-molded. In this process, the two halves of a neck finish cavity or neckring are mounted to an actuating head assembly, which intermeshes with the two halves of the blow-mold cavity. The process cycle begins with the main body mold cavity open and the neckring cavity closed. The actuating head assembly moves downward to contact the extrusion die head. When it is in position, extrusion pressure fills the neck section with plastic melt. After it is held for one to two seconds, the head assembly moves upward while, simultaneously, the parison is extruded. When the head assembly reaches the top of its stroke, the blow-mold cavity closes on the parison. The remaining steps of parison pinch-off, blowing, and part removal all follow conventional techniques. Although the production cycle is somewhat slow, the process offers the quality advantage of an accurately molded neck and the process advantage of a parison held at both ends.
