This effects restoration of reservoir energy, which moves the formerly unrecoverable secondary reserves through the reservoir to the wellbore.

A non-thermal recovery method which uses gaseous solvents to increase oil recovery.

Vapex(vapor extraction) is a relatively new process for the recovery of heavy oil and bitumen that involves the injection of a vaporized solvent to reduce the viscosity of the oil. The diluted oil is then allowed to drain into a production well under the influence of gravity. It is a potentially economic process that can be applied to reservoirs that are not suitable for thermal recovery method. In addition, the process has the potential to sequester greenhouse gases, and is capable of in situ upgrading of heavy oil.

The VAPEX process uses saturated hydrocarbon solvent vapour (ethane, propane or butane) in conjunction with horizontal wells to mobilize and recover viscous oils and bitumens from hydrocarbon deposits in which the bottom water zone (aquifer) is used to deliver the solvent vapour to the base of the reservoir. The process involves injecting a hydrocarbon solvent into the reservoir along with a displacement gas to mobilize the hydrocarbons in the reservoir and move them toward the production well.

Le solvant dilue le bitume, ce qui en réduit la viscosité et permet à l'huile d'être drainé vers les puits de production par gravité.

Computer simulation of single-well steam assisted gravity drainage(SW-SAGD).... Steam assisted gravity drainage(SAGD) is an effective method of producing heavy oil and bitumen. In a typical SAGD approach, steam is injected into a horizontal well located directly above a horizontal producer. A steam chamber grows around the injection well and helps displace heated oil toward the production well. Single-well(SW) SAGD attempts to create a similar process using only one horizontal well. This may include steam injection from the toe of the horizontal well with production at the heel. Obvious advantages of SW-SAGD include cost savings and utility in relatively thin reservoirs. However, the process is technically challenging. To improve early-time response of SW-SAGD, it is necessary to heat the nearwellbore area to reduce oil viscosity and allow gravity drainage to take place.

Celle-ci forme ce que l'on appelle une chambre de vapeur, cède sa chaleur au contact de l'huile en place et se condense en eau liquide au niveau de ce contact. L'huile voit sa viscosité diminuer par cet apport de chaleur et peut s'écouler plus facilement. L'huile et l'eau liquide s'écoulent le long de la chambre de vapeur sous l'action de la gravité vers le puits horizontal inférieur. Afin de limiter le nombre de puits, des ingénieurs ont proposé de réaliser l'injection de vapeur et la production de l'huile réchauffée et de l'eau due à la condensation de la vapeur, dans un unique puits horizontal. Deux principales stratégies peuvent être adoptées : 1) celle de la stimulation par injection cyclique («Huff and Puff»), qui consiste à injecter la vapeur de façon discontinue (cyclique) et de récupérer l'huile au même endroit. Cette technique a l'avantage de produire rapidement de l'huile, donc d'augmenter la productivité, cependant elle ne permet pas un taux de récupération élevé des huiles en place; 2) celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur («Steam Drive»), qui consiste à injecter la vapeur sur une longue période à partir d'un puits spécifiquement dédié à cette fonction et de récupérer l'huile dans d'autres puits situés aux environs. Cette technique, à l'inverse de celle à injection cyclique, permet d'atteindre de façon progressive un taux de récupération élevé. Parmi ces technologies, on pourra distinguer celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur par zone annulaire chauffée («Heated Annulus Steam Drive») et celle de drainage gravitaire renforcé par la vapeur («Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage»). La deuxième (SAGD) commence à faire ses preuves aujourd'hui. Elle permet, par l'utilisation de puits horizontaux multidrains d'améliorer considérablement la productivité et le taux de récupération des huiles en place, tout en minimisant l'utilisation de vapeur.

Unlike drugs, to which HIV can develop resistance by genetically reshaping its component parts, the engineered (smart bomb) virus attacks a feature that HIV probably cannot alter without rendering itself harmless. In laboratory experiments, it reduced HIV to undetectable levels, raising the possibility of an entirely new kind of therapy for treating AIDS and maybe other viral diseases.

The virus doesn’t seem to infect any cells other than those infected with HIV. The method consists of reprogramming a virus, changing its natural target so that it kills another virus. However, the therapy based on injection of live viruses is unlikely to be approved easily.

The HIV-hunting virus has been designed by Dr. John Rose and his colleagues at Yale University School of Medicine this year. They worked with a well-understood virus that infects cattle, known as VSV, or vesicular stomatitis virus and stripped out the gene that makes its protein coat. In its place, they inserted human genes for the two proteins that constitutes the T-cell lack. This created a novel virus, coated with T-cell lock proteins avid to find HIV keys, a sort of HIV in reverse. When added to culture of infected human T-cells, the redesigned viruses sought out and killed them.

We describe the theoretical basis and practical details of a method for creating parametric images of the ratio of regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) to volume(rCBV) from planar gamma-camera images following intravenous injection of any intravascular tracer and after correction for dispersion of the bolus before it arrives at the head. This ratio, which is the most sensitive index of the extent to which perfusion is being maintained by vasodilatation in patients with cerebro-vascular disease, indicates whether the limits of compensation have been, or are in danger of being, exceeded and identifies any ischaemic penumbra. Evidence is provided of the validity of the correction and the accuracy of calculation of the ratio. The range of normal values established is not significantly different from that previously reported using positron emission tomography. This technique has proved sufficiently sensitive to be clinically useful in patients with abnormalities of cerebral perfusion.
